Hour 4 – Rhythmic Reading

Hey Guys! Fay from Blog A Book Etc here! How are you getting on so far? I am sure that you are steaming through your pile with gusto right! One thing that really helps me when I am reading is having a good playlist in the background. There are some people like a couple of my friends that I know cannot stand having music in the background which of course is fine as it is your ‘me’ time and whatever floats your boat.

When I look into music whilst reading I can be quite selective as I feel I need to read the first chapter so I can grasp the pace of the book before I choose the right tunes. Is it just me?! A couple of examples that I always revert to when trying to describe what many of my friends call a ‘weird tendency’ is whenever I am reading a Carole Matthews book around Christmas time it helps to listen to Christmassy music and that can be anything from Mariah Carey to the lovely Mr Michael Bublé.

At the moment I am working my way through The Chocolate Lover’s Christmas by Carole Matthews and as much as I want to click on the play button for the illustrious Mr Bublé I just can’t bring myself to do it. Instead I am listening to a variety of tunes from Mumford and Sons to an older Maroon 5 album called Songs About Jane but it really isn’t the same – I might have to just click play.

Listening to music also makes the tube journeys to and from work a lot more bareable as they can take anything from 40 minutes to an hour. Just think nose deep in a book and ear buds in = own world in a cramped space on public transport!

Do you have any favourite songs that you hit play to help you get through books?

As you are chilling out with your books for the thon I hope you enjoy listening to the few songs I have put in between paragraphs. There are a couple that are more upbeat than easy listening but I am hoping that if they give you that extra jump it will help you hold out for the rest of the thon!

  1. I keep the TV running while I’m reading. I think it is probably easier for me to tune out. If I played music, I’d be constantly singing while trying to read!

  2. So, I’m the type that can basically listen to anything when I’m reading. I just like to have background noise. My favourite genres to listen to for reading tend to be Gregorian Chants, Classical, Folk, Rock, or Metal, but, again, basically is fair game.

  3. I need the music to be instrumental only! I have Charlie Brown Christmas playing right now, and will switch to Chris Botti’s Christmas next!

  4. I love listening to music while I’m reading. Often songs with words distract me too much so I listen to instrumental – from classical to hip hop – but I also like to coordinate the music with the books at times like you describe with the Christmas books. Sometimes I play Egyptian music while reading about mummies or I played a lot of classical when I read A Woman of Note, who was a piano virtuoso from Vienna. It helps set the mood!

  5. I created a playlist for the 24 Hour Readathon. It has mostly instrumental soundtracks–starting with the new Cinderella soundtrack composed by Patrick Doyle 😉

  6. There’s quite a lot, haha! Here’s a few: Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, Avril Lavigne, 30 Seconds to Mars, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, All That Remains, Still Remains. : )

  7. My background music has to be music with no words… soft piano or other instrument with not a lot of loud going on, or classical or jazz but not too jazzy or I will wind up dancing instead of reading. LOL
