Hour 9 – A Decade of Dewey

Hello readers! It’s Courtney @StiletoStrytime coming in to spend the next two hours immersed in all things books with you. It feels like readathon hours always fly by. It’s Hour 9 already! Can you believe it? When I think back at the over a decade of readathons that I have been a reader and co-host (yikes, I might be feeling a little old over here)…it has all seemed to fly by. There was a time when it really just us hardcore book bloggers and now it’s readers from all over the world. As a librarian I love me a big stack of books so I decided to go back over the years and pull some of my TBR readathon piles. It’s amazing how all kinds of memories came flooding back. I can remember so much about each of those readathons by the books I read.

It’s been the best of times- the time I read 15.5 hours and the highest page total at 3,756 pages. And it’s been the worst of times- the time I co-hosted for four hours straight in the middle of the night and ended up at the eye doctor from poking a hole in my cornea. I never did find out how I did that one but it was implied we were all kinda crazy for even attempting to do this let alone twice a year! But above all it’s been a blast. This is where readers feel among their own. It’s the time when we come together and celebrate. So remember to have fun! THAT is what it is all about.

Do you have a best or most challenging readathon memory to share? How about an old TBR pile that brings back memories? We would love to have you share below or on any of our social media. Please remember to #readathon or @readathon on Twitter. You can also use #deweymemories Happy Reading!

Hour 9 – Readathon Self Care

Hi, I’m Ellie, you can find me at @ermreading on Twitter, Instagram and Youtube

Readathons can sometimes be a stressful time but here at Dewey’s, we don’t want you to stress out, we want you to have fun, look after yourself and enjoy reading. So I’ve put together some self care tips for 24 hour readathons to help you look after yourself and stay motivated!

Take breaks
You don’t have to read for every minute of the 24 hours, take a moment to relax, have a drink, look at social media or just sit back and rest.

Don’t compare yourself to others
The downfall of many a reader’s motivation can be seeing other people reading more than them. Don’t compare your reading to others, read at your own speed.

Switch books or mediums
This may not work for everyone or every book but for me, switching between books and formats helps keep me motivated to read.

Set yourself mini goals and celebrate when you achieve them
These can help you feel productive, motivated and successful throughout the day, plus you get to reward yourself!

Stay hydrated
Make sure you’re drinking enough water to help your brain ingest all the new material you’re reading and absorbing.

If you can, go outside
Some fresh air will do you good and keep your mental energy up to keep going!

Sleep if you need to
It’s okay if you can’t stay awake reading for a full 24 hours, if you need to sleep, look after your body and get some sleep

I hope you’re enjoying the readathon so far and these tips are helpful to you for the rest of it. I’ll be over on @readathon’s Twitter for the next two hours and then my own, @ermreading, after that if you want to come chat to me!

Hour 9 – It’s breakfast time somewhere in the world…

Good morning Australia! What are you having for breakfast?

via GIPHY

I personally like to have crumpets for my readathon breakfast but I have about ten hours to wait for that buttery goodness. And I guess in America, breakfast has been and gone. However, because it’s readathon I give you permission to break the rules and eat breakfast whenever you want.

Did you know that sloths move so slowly to conserve energy because the leaves they eat are so lacking in nutrition? You might be feeling sloth-like right now, but don’t forget to keep your energy levels up by eating your snacks and staying hydrated. OK, I just wanted an excuse to share with you this adorable baby sloth:

Did you catch the yawn?

Reverse Readathon Hour 9

Kendra here again! It’s 4am here, which is always a strange time to be awake, but no matter where you live, I suspect we’re all hitting that wall. You know the one I mean, that moment when things start blurring together as your stare into the depths of your caffeinated beverage of choice.

For those us struggling, I want to know, what are your strategies for staying awake during a readathon? Do change up what you are reading? Do snacks/caffeine help you out? (I obviously am in that last camp. 😉 )

But hang in there! So many wonderful books await! Happy Reading. ❤

Hour 9 – Get Moving

As wonderful as books are, when you’re trying to spend 24 hours reading, it’s important to make sure you get up and move around every once in a while. It’s dance break time!

I’m sure your pet friends will make it difficult to get up. But they can participate, too! Maybe you have a snake who can do the twist or a cat who can salsa and you want to record it and send the video to me directly asap. I hear, but have not confirmed, that children are also cute when they dance.

What song makes you get up and dance?

Thanks again for hanging out with me for a couple of hours! Be sure to find me on Twitter @bonjourcass and on Goodreads @bonjourcass. Enjoy the rest of the ‘thon, friends–may you read all the books and eat all the snacks.

Participate in our Mini-Challenges ANY TIME! They are located HERE, and they are all open for the entire 24 hours of the event!

Hour 9 – Book Nerdery

Well, hello! Salutations! My name is Cass—I’m @bonjourcass on Twitter because I am just really fond of greetings—and I will be your cohost for the next three hours. As a proud book nerd, I couldn’t be more excited to spend this literary time with you. In preparation, I’ve been singing, “She’s making a list and checking it twice, gonna find out what’s good and not so good” (rhyming needs work) to the tune of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” for days. Days. I’m very popular.

One area of book nerdery I feel doesn’t get nearly enough attention is fictional authors. Not authors of fiction, but authors who don’t really exist who are characters in a book about books. Are you following me? Think Peter Van Houten, the fictional author of An Imperial Affliction in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, or Karen Eiffel, the source of all Harold Crick’s problems, from the movie Stranger than Fiction. There are a ton of these, of course. Who could guess that writers love writing about other writers?

Secretariat by Diane NguyenMy favorite fictional author is Diane Nguyen from the Netflix series BoJack Horseman. In the first season, she gets hired by Penguin (run by actual penguins) to ghostwrite a book about BoJack, a former TV star. We hear snippets of the book in voice overs, but if I had my way, I’d be able to read the whole thing. I’d also like to read Diane’s book on Secretariat (who, in the BoJack Horseman universe, has a really dark history).

Do you have a favorite fictional author? Any fictional fiction or non-fiction you wish you were able to read? Let me know in the comments, or on Twitter with the hashtag #booknerdery.

Enjoy hour nine!

Hour 9 – Let’s go hunt!

Hi everyone! I’m Dana and I’ll be hanging out with you for the next couple of hours. Dewey’s is my most favorite bookish event and I’m super excited to be back again.

Let’s go on a little scavenger hunt, shall we?

  1. Grab a glass of your favorite beverage and hydrate yourself
  2. Grab a healthy snack…you’ve been reading for hours and it’s a great pick me up
  3. Go outside and get some fresh air for a few minutes
  4. Come back in and find your favorite bookish meme and share it with me
  5. Get back to reading and have fun!

Here’s one of my favorite bookish memes. It doesn’t hurt that it features my pretend husband, Four 🙂

Happy reading friends!

Hour 9 – Just Leave All the Books With Me

Hello everyone and welcome to hour nine of Dewey’s Readathon! My name is Cass and I am thrilled to be your co-host for next few hours. Nothing makes me happier than a fall ‘thon…well, other than a spring ‘thon.

Hour 9 – High Hopes

Readerbuzz in Spring

It’s the top of Hour 9 and I’m delighted to be handed the car keys for the next two hours.

I’m Deb Nance from Readerbuzz and I’m amazed to report that this is my fifteenth (oh my!) readathon. I’m a Lark, not an Owl, so it will come as no surprise to you to learn that I’ve only made it all twenty-four hours one time. Sigh.

How about you? Do you think you’ll make it through?

I’m very hopeful this time. In fact, you might say that I have “High Hopes.” Here’s Frank to offer up a little Hour 9 inspiration.

So there we go. Cross your fingers for me and I’ll cross my fingers for you.

C’mon, ants, let’s move that rubber tree plant. Let’s go, rams, and we can bring down that dam. Vamos, readers, and let’s hang in there for the last (gulp!) sixteen hours!
