Hour 6 – Food! Glorious Food!

Noms! It’s about lunch time for me, and oh I love the foods I get during Readathon. I always go for a big meals so that I can limit the snacking. Then I go ahead and snack anyways. In my defense, Hubby is an amazing cook and I bake a really nice cheesecake.

It’s been joked about a lot, but I really would enjoy a Readathon themed cookbook. From the very advanced, full meals, to the “walk to the 7-11 and pick up a soda” kinds of recipes. Your cooking and baking skills wouldn’t matter so much as just sharing a recipe with a supportive community. Eh, it’s something we’ll kick down the curb for a while yet.

In the meantime, what are you eating for your meals/snacks this fine day? Do you pick foods based on how easy it is to read while eating? I’ve had to forgo a few snacks because I can’t eat and read at the same time.

Hour 6 – Keep Me Updated!

Hi everyone, I’m Dana! I’ll be with you for the next couple of hours. Hopefully you’ve hit your stride and your reading is rocking along. I’m in Florida where the massive hurricane just hit and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I was looking forward to this day. I plan to escape into reading as much as I possibly can.

This readathon is my favorite bookish event. I am not sure exactly how I first learned of it but I know that I have ben participating as a reader for about 9 years. I have been honored to be a cohostess for 3. It’s so fun to come up with fun posts to share on the day of the event. I love the community. I love the opportunity to read as much as I want for a straight 24 hours. I love finding new people to follow. When I first started, we seemed to mostly interact on blogs (mine). Now it seems that it’s pretty split between Instagram and Twitter (mine).

I so enjoy seeing all the different ways people interact with this day. Whether you are updating every hour or only 2 times, it’s fun to see how everyone’s day is going. And all the pictures of food. Y’all. It’s a great day!

Are you updating somewhere today? If so, what medium are you using?

Hour 6 and a Quarter Thon Crisis

I would say evening all but as our timings are all quite different let’s go with a jovial ‘Hello There!’. We are running between 10am in US MST/PDT right across to 5pm in UK GMT time right now. So with that in mind, how are we all doing? Let’s try to keep the meltdowns at bay shall we!

With the breakfast, lunch and dinner out of the way I’m Fay and I’ll be your co-host for the next two hours with a massive thank you to Kristen from @BookGoil for the last three hours. I have been lucky enough to co-host for you lovely lot before a while back and I am so happy to be back. The first few hours for me seem to just roll right by in a haze of happiness and excitement that the ‘Thon’ is actually happening. Is it just me?! *mini meltdown*

Why don’t we push that to the back of our minds and make the most of the time we have and get reacquainted real quick! Take 5 minutes, put your current read down, have a big stretch and maybe get up and walk around whilst you get yourself onto Twitter, Insta (+/- Stories!) or the comments section and answer the following:

  • What’s your name?
  • What are you reading?
  • What are you looking forward to reading the most?
  • Why do you love the Readathon so much?

Check out my answers on the following platforms

Personal Insta Stories (@Fay.Simone).

Over the past year I haven’t really had much time to read so Audible really has been a close and personal friend of mine – when I don’t read for a while I get some seriously sad vibes – does this happen to you?

During this years thon I am going to make a conscious effort to make the most out of audible whilst I am up, out and about or too tired to pick up a book. Audio books are also great if you have house work to do, you are driving, in the pool (with wireless headphones!) or you want to get a bit of social media time in without losing out.

On the flip side when I have a physical book on the go I LOVE to have a playlist on in the background that gets me into the zone. My playlists vary depending on book genre and personal feelings at the time. Do you have a certain playlist that gets you through a book or five!?

A few little reminders:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Stay fed
  • Take regular breaks (whether you are reading or listening)
  • Don’t forget to give your bladder some time! Take the book with you!!!

The one biggest reminder is

YOU CAN DO THIS!

You are already a quarter of the way through after all!

Participate in our Mini-Challenges ANY TIME! They are located HERE, and they are all open for the entire 24 hours of the event!

Hour 6 – Caffeine and Socializing!

Hello everyone and welcome to the 6th Hour! How are you all doing? My name is Rachel Noel and I’ll be your co-host for the next 3 hours. This is my first time as a co-host. Please be merciful!

I live in the Eastern Time Zone so it’s about lunchtime for me. A good time to get up, stretch the legs, get some more caffeine and do some socializing! Whatever timezone you’re in, you can’t forget to get up and move around every now and then. I speak from experience. One Read-A-Thon I nearly fell after getting off the couch because I hadn’t realized my foot had gone to sleep! Reading can be hazardous to your health if you’re not careful. Either that or I’m just that klutzy. ^_^

But enough of the Caution Tape, let’s not forget that having fun is the high priority! I know I purposefully avoid books that I’m certain are going to bring me down because I want to have all the energy. I’m talking Pinkie Pie on Monster Drinks kind of energy! But you can’t always predict when a book is going to energize or drain you. If you do end up reading one that empties your energy tanks, don’t be afraid to take a break. The Read-A-Thon will be here for you!

Don’t forget to partake in the Mini-Challenges that we still have going!

May your books be always 5 out of 5 and your mug never empty!

Hour 6 – The Second Quarter

Oh hello again! It’s Emily, back for hour 6. We had a nice, peaceful hour 5, didn’t we? Well now it’s hour six, which means we’re coming up on Q2 of this Readathon, and it’s time to get down to business!

Let’s set some goals as we approach our second quarter, shall we? Here are some suggestions:

  • Number of pages you want to read in the second quarter.
  • Number of cheers you’ll send out to fellow Readathoners on Twitter or social media. (Use the #readathon hashtag to find new friends to cheer!)
  • Amount of caffiene you’ll consume to stay alert.
  • Number of mini-challenges you aim to enter.
  • How much fun you’ll have. (Feel free to measure this in the Metric System or Imperial System.)

Get back to it, friends! Have fun out there!

Hour 6 – Holla at my Poetry Lovers

FYI (6)

Two of my favorite word-nerd events happen in April: Readathon (duh) and National Poetry Month. Adding poetry to your readathon stack makes it so much richer. Here are a few tips to integrate poetry into your readathon stack.

  • Find a poetry playlist on YouTube. I’m especially fond of Button Poetry, which features some of the most cutting-edge and amazing spoken word and slam poetry performances. The great thing about a YouTube playlist is that you can have it on in the background while you prep snacks, take a walk, or simply want to rest your eyes.

  • Grab a poetry collection that catches your eye from your stacks or the library. When you want to take a book reading or social media break, read one poem. Then stand up and read the poem aloud. This only takes 3 to 5 minutes, but you’ll notice such a difference between reading a poem with only your eyes and reading it aloud. This is a great “palate” cleanser between books! poetrymuchdeep
  • There are gobs and gobs of amazing online literary journals filled to bursting with poetry and other writing. This BuzzFeed list is a great starting point for online and print journals. Take a few seconds and read a poem or two and see if you find a new to you favorite literary journal.

Hour 6 – Reading with Kids

My Reading Adventure

Hi! Amanda here from Fig and Thistle! I’ll be your co-host for the next few hours.

I can relate to how that little fellow feels. I cry a bit when I’m trying to read on my lunch-break and I’m constantly interrupted. I just wanna read! Waaahhhh!

That’s my favorite part of read-a-thon, reading for hours on end! I have to remind myself to be kind to my brain, eyes, and body and move around and do other things. Luckily, my kids help me with that! I may stay squirreled away and reading for hours (thanks, husband!) but when I emerge for a break I like to involve my kids in read-a-thon. Okay, I don’t force my teenager, she is doing her thing, but my two little ones Atticus (nearly 5) and Persy Jane (2 1/2) are eager to read, visit the library, watch an episode of Reading Rainbow (streaming on Netflix and Amazon!) and even play read-a-thon.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Here is Atticus prepping his tent for read-a-thon. Stacks of books are ready in the tent and Dr. Doom, Spider-man, and Naked Cabbage Patch Baby are ready to read.

When you feel the need to take a break from reading, think about spending that time prepping the next generation of read-a-thoners! This isn’t just for parents; read to a neighborhood kid, niece, nephew, etc…. Or you could donate some time, books, or money to a literacy group or library.

Remember, read-a-thon is about fostering a community of readers and our little book lovers count!

Hour 6 – Don’t Believe Me Just Read!!!

Saturday night and I’m in my seat, don’t believe me just READ!!!

Amanda here from Fig and Thistle. How’s that TBR going? I love the sense of community Read-a-thon fosters among all of us booklovers, but I also love the solitude and peace of the reading component. I try to go 50/50 with my reading and socializing. Find what works for you and don’t get frustrated. If you want to throw your TBR to the wind and engage in more cheering, blogging, and tweeting, GO FOR IT! If you want to disengage from social media and purely focus on reading, GO FOR IT! Not feeling your TBR that seemed so great last night? How about a library field trip or revisiting your shelves. Read-a-thon is not about rules and logging hours. This is a celebration of the wonderful world of books, literacy, imagination, and community.

Do Read-a-thon YOUR WAY and Book-It-Up!
