Hour 5 – My Favorite Memory

Hey everyone, I am Dana and I will be with you for the next couple of hours. I am so excited to have one last hoorah with Andi and Heather.

Dewey’s is my favorite bookish event of the year. I haven’t participated every six months but I have tried to do as many as I could.

My favorite memory is from the first time I participated. My best friend’s daughter had just been diagnosed with type one diabetes. I posted on my book blog and friends in the book community pledged a certain amount per book or per page or per hour I read.

It was wonderful! We raised money for pediatric diabetes research and I read for the entire 24 hours. I have never accomplished that since.

Happy reading!

Hour 5 – It’s High Noon

Okay, it’s only noon here in the Eastern time zone but I figured, what better way to kick off my turn at the helm? Hi! I’m Rachel Noel and I’ll be your host for the next couple of hours.

We’ve been at this Readathon for a few hours now. Have you gotten up and walked around a bit? Have you been drinking water? Have you had time to eat? Do I sound enough like a worried grandmother? I’m sure you’ve heard this a lot if you’ve been looking up Readathon tips, but it’s true: Self-Care is Important! Heck, it’s one of the reasons I look forward to Readathon. You get to spend the entire day reading, resting and doing something you enjoy. Guilt free!

So make sure you take care of yourself and take the time to rest up and read your fill. And if you can’t read all day that’s fine! Part of taking care of yourself is not being yourself up over these things. Welcome to the Readathon, where you can read without fear of judgement!

Hour 5 – Stretch it out! Then Grab a Drink.

Ok y’all It’s time to move! I’ve been in my little reading nest for the past bit and now my body is telling me it needs to stretch out. I work a desk job and this is one of the stretch routines I do during the day to try and relax a bit.

Are you feeling better? Energized and ready to keep going on reading! I have a couple of audio books this year so I can take a walk in the park next to my house and listen while walking. I’m just trying to catch those last few wonderful rays of sun before winter begins in earnest. It’s also a way I can wake myself up when I get into a napping/dozing mood. Though today is a bit chilly where I am so we shall see if I will really head out.

Honestly, I told you I didn’t get to do much prep for this year but I did get one thing that has made all the difference for this year’s ‘thon for me. It’s a ceramic, electric teapot! (I know I might be late to the game but goodness I love this thing.) I now have what essentially amounts to an endless supply of quick tea and it’s cold out today and it’s perfect.

days GIF

I got a whole bunch of different teas from a friend who is a true connoisseur and it has been an adventure today. There is one that I don’t know what’s in it, but dang it’s good. (She just gave me some loose leaf packets from her cupboards and now is on vacation so I will have to ask when she gets back) Are there any other tea enthusiasts out there? Or is this more of a coffee crowd? Maybe some of my South American friends are drinking some of that amazing yerba mate?

Ok, you wonderful people you, we have stretched, we have refilled our mugs and we are on to the next page! I will be leaving you all in the more than capable hands of the lovely Dana! So, Keep on keepin’ on. You are incredible! Drop a line as to how you’re feeling! Let us know you’re there and never forget:

Reverse Readathon Hour 5

Hi everyone! It’s Elizabeth here from Earl Grey Editing. I’m super excited to be participating in this reverse readathon. For once, I started when it was actually daylight outside! There’s still daylight outside, but it has been a few hours and it has me a bit like:

Someone tell that koala it dropped its book!

It’s the middle of the night or early hours of the morning for those of you in other parts of the world. How are you coping? Are you finding the timing of the readathon especially challenging or are you sailing through? I’d love to hear about how you’re going!

Whenever the readathon runs its usual hours, I’m totally shameless about sleeping through the first eight hours. I’m all here for getting through as many books as possible, but getting enough sleep is crucial for me unless I want to be more like:

I swear she’s just yawning!

And that’s not fun for anyone. So, please take care of yourself, however that looks for you. And, if you feel comfortable, let us know how you’re doing it! You never know who you might help out.

Happy reading, everyone!

Hour 5 – Interruptions

I can’t believe it’s already my last hour of hosting! I’ll be passing on the torch to Fay at the end of the hour.

So, soon I will be somewhat free and hours away from my husband waking up to go to work. Hopefully my dog is chill cause this video is going to just about sum me up.

I love this video and have watched it a million times over. I’m hoping everyone is having an awesome readathon and has found limited distractions, but I know there are many in life – *cough TWITTER cough*. Make sure to check out mini challenges throughout the day, now you don’t have to check in for new ones all the time and do them at your leisure. Also, I may be hosting one *wink wink*.

Worse distraction so far? Anybody?

Mine was mainly my dog being all pouty and cute at the same time. He makes a really cute huff when he doesn’t get what he wants. Oh and cohosting for these last few hours obviously there was limited reading going on. Now off to cheer and check some social media and then maybe some reading.

Happy reading friends and see you over on Twitter and possibly many other social medias so I can read more soon.

Hour 5 – Break Up Your Reading

Hello again! Kendra here from the Reading Women podcast and Booktube. This is my last hour with you guys, but don’t worry. It’ll be good, because we’re gonna talk about kiddie lit.

Children’s literature is an oft-forgotten corner of the Bookternet. It’s right in between the pop-up books and video game guides. But I love all types of children’s literature — middle reader, picture books, choose your own adventure — just hand it over.

During readathons, I often feel overwhelmed by all the books I want to read or by all the intense, adult topics I’m reading. For my first readathon, I thought reading the dense, but wonderful, The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen would be a good idea. No! Choose life, past Kendra!

Sharon Creech signed Dylan’s copy for him!

Now I know it’s probably a good idea to break up your reading. Last readathon, I read graphic novels every time I wanted a break. But this time, I plan on reading some children’s lit.

Children’s books can be one of the best way to break up an intense reading day, especially if you listen to them on audio. When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead and Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool are some of my all-time favorites. If you’re looking to go more the poetry novel route, check out Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jaqueline Woodson, or, Dylan’s favorite, Love That Dog by Sharon Creech.

On my TBR this readathon is Jen Campbell’s Franklin’s Flying Bookshop. Do you have any children’s lit on your TBR? Any favorites? However you decide to break of your readathon, I’m sure you’ll do great! Keep reading, bookish friends!

Hour 5 – The Bob Ross of Readathon Hours

Hi hi hello! This is Emily from Books, the Universe and Everything, and I am your host for the next two hours. I hope you’ll stop by to say hello to me over on the Readathon account on Twitter. My special areas of interest are: Muggles, tacos, Kurt Vonnegut, the Shire, social justice non-fiction, and cheese.

Hour five is feeling real good, isn’t it? You’ve settled in, your reading spot of choice is probably molded to your bottom by now, you’ve entered some mini-challenges, you’ve broken into the snacks (possibly several times), and best of all: you’re in your happy place—reading.

In my humble opinion, hour five is the Bob Ross of Readathon hours. It’s peaceful and relaxing because you’re in control of your day. You can read any book in your Readathon stack, or pull a wildcard down from the shelves! You can open all the snacks at once, or drink more coffee than is normally advisable. Whatever makes you happy, you can do it. You can feel joyful and free, because today is set aside for doing the thing you love best: reading!

Now go on, joyful Readathoners, be free! Let hour five be the hour you read whatever your heart tells you to read next!

(And if you want to make my day even better, tell me how you’re channeling Bob Ross during hour 5 in the comments.)

Hour 5 – TIME TO READ AND DO ALL THE THINGS!

FYI (5)

I don’t know about you, but I tend to build readathon up in my brain and imbue it with magical powers. On readathon day I will never tire, my day will be smooth and solitary, the books will quench my insaitable desire to read, my spinach artichoke dip will never grow cold, and my coffee flows without ceasing.

success

Instead I start readathon day and find myself overwhelmed like one of those supermarket game show contestants. I simply don’t know where to start. I want it all and I want it now.

Do I cheer on Twitter? Audiobook? Read a graphic novel? Dig into a thick book? Instagram all the things? *breathes into paper bag*

sheldon

This year I’m trying something new. I’m using my kitchen timer and setting it to read for an hour or so, then I’ll do about 15 minutes of social media, read for another hour, and then take a 30 minute break to walk around or listen to an audiobook while I do something active. I imagine that this way I’ll have time for social media, mini-challenges, blogging, cheering, reading, and I won’t feel like death when it’s over.

If you have any readathon time management tips let me know in the comments. Or, feel free to tell me I’m too obsessed with planning and should just go with the flow (that’s my husband’s opinion).

Hour 5 – Library Living

reading

Hey guys! You are doing great as we all head into Hour 5 and the Twitter as usual is on fire! Stick with it peeps I know you can make it. Currently I am at home with a cuppa and making plans to stick an audio book on so I can run errands and come back and clean the house. If you are on the move how are you making a dent in your stack?

Whilst having a mooch on the internet I was thinking about you guys and if you were not reading at home where would you be? The one place in mind that really stuck out was your local library. As many a bibliophile will probably admit the library can be a sanctuary for peace, quiet and an overall sanctuary surrounded by items that you truly love.

Personally my library is quite unappealing as it is part of a local council building and each time I walk past seems to have less and less books in it. This got me to thinking about travel – on my travel I have found a lot of independent book shops which usually means that clothes get left behind in the effort to fit in those books that I just could not leave behind or I end up paying for extra baggage!

One thing that I have never really considered is visiting libraries whilst travelling, not so much for the borrowing aspect but just to see how libraries elsewhere are holding up. Back to my mooch! I found a list of libraries that are apparently must sees and whittled it down to my 5 favourites as we are in Hour 5 to share with you lovelies.

Have a look a let me know what you think or if you have been to any of them …
