Hour 18 – Kristen’s Memories + Vlogging

So it took some digging, but I found my first Dewey’s readathon post. I had to find my old blog – Bookworming in the 21st Century and it was April 10, 2010 when I first dove into the readathon! I overslept but logged on and planned to eat every 2-4 hours because I was dieting (oh my!) and had a variety of YA books and graphic novels on my TBR. I ended up reading 6.5 books and struggling to get through hours 20 and 21 and soon fell asleep. I also did EVERY mini challenge and posted it on my blog so who knows how much I actually read that day.

While I was there, I found some old vlogs I had tried out and wow… I’m so glad I quit that. I love some vlogs but I’ve never been great at them myself so I never pursued it seriously.

If you have a great vlog/Booktube about the readathon make sure to connect below! If you want to share your first readathon memory, I’d love to hear it! I know this is isn’t the last Dewey 24 hour readathon, but that it could have been made me think about my many times participating! I haven’t done them ALL since 2010, but I’ve tried to do as many as possible, even if it was just from Twitter/Instagram (sometimes I’m too lazy to blog!).

This hour’s tip for staying awake is drink your fluids – it’s good for you and it makes you get up to use the bathroom more frequently! As my last hour hosting, I’m hoping to make it the whole 24 hours but we’ll see what happens when I log off! What’s your goal?

Hour 18 – Boooooookkkkk!! It’s All Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus

WELCOME to HOUR 18!!

You did it! Can you believe it? You made it more than 75% of the way!! You have come so far but don’t stop now. My name is Courtney; I’m a librarian formerly blogging at Stiletto Storytime but you can catch me now on Twitter @StiletoStrytime. I will be hanging out with you for the next hour or so of Readathon. I know we are really pushing into the hard hours but I know you can hang and I will try to keep things fun.

One of the things I love about our Dewey’s October Readathon is the time of year and Halloween being just around the corner. We get to play with all that Hocus Pocus fun which the kid in me just adores. I have dressed up as a Sanderson sister a time or two…Sarah both times I must admit but we all know Winifred from Hocus Pocus who had her most precious book stolen and lost so I was wondering…do you have a favorite “booooookkkk” that you would would turn you into a “wicked witch” about if you lost or couldn’t find it?

Mine would absolutely be my copy of Pride and Prejudice that belonged to my Great Grandmother. She would always write her name and the year she read a book on the inside front cover and she just happened to read that copy in 1981 the year I was born. It’s truly a treasure to me and I would turn Salem upside down in search of it…rings of salt, smelly zombie ex-boyfriends and admittedly adorable black felines be darned.

So let me know yours here or on Twitter and keep reading!!!

Reverse Readathon Hour 18

Hey, it’s me again, Janani from The Shrinkette. It’s a little past midnight, and I’ve just brewed a pot of tea ( i.e. dumped a teabag in a mug of hot water) because my system requires a caffeine boost. How’s everyone doing so far? Are you enjoying this chilled out readathon? How’s the reverse timing working out in your timezone? Read anything amazing today?

I want to take a minute here to cheer you all for being here and participating in the readathon today. Whether you’ve read 18 minutes or 18 hours, you’re here, and I’m rooting for ya.

Now, let’s talk comics. Or graphic novels. Or sequential art. Or all of the above. I love throwing in comics into my readathon TBR, it makes for such a nice break in format and brain space. Today, I’m catching up on the last few volumes of Ms. Marvel

I love this series so much, it’s so full of heart and shenanigans, and I’m super excited for her appearance in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.

I’m always looking for fun comics that feature cool protagonists that aren’t just dudes beating up on each other. If you’re a comics reader, let me know which ones you’re reading in the comments below! I’d love to add more to my list (not like my TBR isn’t overflowing or anything).

Also taking a moment to shoutout our wonderful hosts Andi and Heather for putting together this special edition of readathon. To paraphrase Leslie Knope, y’all are beautiful rainbow infused space unicorns. Thanks for all you do.

Okay readers, let’s rally. Only 6 more hours to go!

Hour 18 – Robots vs. Fairies

Aw. It’s my last hour as a co-host! I’ll be passing on the reins to the lovely and talented Kendra after this. Please be as nice to her as you have been to me. Who am I kidding? Of course you will be. You’re awesome!

I recently finished the anthology Robots vs. Fairies where authors presented their stories about either robots or fairies and declared themselves either Team Robot or Team Fairy, well, in terms of which they would prefer to become our benevolent overlords. I know, in my heart of hearts, I will always be Team Robot. When I mentioned this to my husband he declared himself Team Fairy and I was surprised! But, we both agreed, it would be an awesome fight to watch.

Now I’m very curious, are you Team Robot or Team Fairy? Which would you rather have as an overlord? Which do you think actually could become our overlords! Which would win in a fight? And if you’re under duress from either side, please blink three times and we’ll send rescue!

It has been such a delight to be your co-host for these three hours. I’ve been enjoying the twitter chats and the cheering. Don’t forget to check our Master Mini-Challenges list full of wonderfully different ways to engage with the Read-A-Thon (I’ve got one on there, so I’m a little partial). You’ve been a delightful audience and I’ve been happy to discuss with you the important topics in life: reading, reading and more reading.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna take a nap at the end of this hour.

Participate in our Mini-Challenges ANY TIME! They are located HERE, and they are all open for the entire 24 hours of the event!

Hour 18 – The Long, Dark Teatime

Hi everyone! It’s Elizabeth here from Earl Grey Editing. I’ll be your co-host for the next two hours. Hour 18 is just getting underway, so there’s only another seven to go! It’s spring in Australia and there are still a good few hours of daylight left, but even I’m feeling a bit tired by this point. How many of you are still awake right now?

Violets, tea cup, Earl Grey Editing
Feeling a little bit wilted?

It can be tempting to mainline caffeine at this point. Goodness knows, I’m a tea addict at the best of times (as you may have deduced from the photo… and my blog’s name). Instead of breaking out the coffee, the extra-strength tea, the hot chocolate or the soda, how about a quick dance party first?

Before you head back to your reading, I’d love for you to chime in with what you’re drinking right now (and whether you’re a fan of Vienna Teng or Yuri!!! On Ice).

Good luck, everyone!

Hour 18 – Strong Coffee

Hi everyone! It’s Elizabeth here from Earl Grey Editing. This is my first time co-hosting and I’m pretty excited! Andi usually covers Hours 18-20, but I’m jumping in this year so she can get some well-earned rest.

A little bit about me: I live in the southeast of Australia, which is how I’m awake and Andi isn’t. I’m a big sci-fi and fantasy nerd, so I’ve been using this readathon to make my way through some of the material on the Hugo Awards shortlists. And I’ve got two little dogs helping me out today. I promise to introduce them later.

So how many of you are awake at the moment?

How about now? I must admit coffee doesn’t do much for me. I’m more of a tea person (as you may have gathered). Although a hot chocolate like the one pictured above also does nicely…

Hour 18 – Audio to the Rescue!

fyi

Hey hey! Andi from Estella’s Revenge back again. I tell ya, the last few readathons audiobooks have really saved my life. It seems like I can never really focus on Readathon day whether there are administrative things to do or family events to attend.  In April, my audiobook of choice was Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, and now it’s Yesternight by Cat Winters.

Hour 18 – And the fun continues!

Dana back for hour 18! How are you holding up? The thing I love the most about this read a thon and is that it’s totally come as you are…if you can’t stay up the whole time or you want to take a cat nap or you want to read straight through…we’re all here just enjoying a day dedicated to reading.

Around this time my eyes sometimes start getting more tired and that’s when I start listening to an audio book to give my eyes a break. Do you listen to books on audio? Let me know in the comments below.

I’ve enjoyed hanging out with everyone and I hope you enjoy the rest of the read a thon!

Hour 18 – The Caffeine Hours!

Welcome to Hour 18! I’m so proud of you for making it this far already! I’m Andi from Estella’s Revenge, and one of your Dewey’s organizers.

While I used to be a night owl in my younger days, as I’ve gotten older, had a kiddo, and since I have four dogs who want a midnight hug from time to time, I am far LESS of a night owl. Add in some wicked insomnia, and I cherish my sleep. CHERISH!

Somehow, despite all that, I always seem to take this next-to-last hosting shift because I LOVE the energy that’s still going strong both here and on Twitter at this hour!

We have several hours to go yet, but what are your secrets for lasting into these later hours? Tell me down in the comments! I might be hopped up on caffeine!
