Hour 10 – You CAN Do It!

Hello readers! It’s Courtney @StiletoStrytime here with you for my last hour. It’s now Hour 10 and I hope you are chugging along just fine. No matter what your pace is your pace and you CAN do this. Much like life, this readathon is a marathon not a sprint. Plus it is different this year because the world we live in is different. How has your readathon changed?

I know for me I have been kindling it so no beautifully stacked pile of physical books from my beloved libraries. My snacks might not be exactly what I would usually choose because I had to send my husband out due to being on immunotherapy and considered high risk. Plus I am definitely more stressed even though it’s the weekend because now doing remote learning as a first grade teacher I feel like I teach 24/7. Home and work boundaries have absolutely disappeared. Let’s be honest. It’s different. For all of us. So how is this readathon different for you? How are you feeling?

Sending happy reading vibes to each and every one of you beautiful bookish people. I have loved my time with you as always. Keep in touch on Twitter and have an amazing readathon. You are almost half way there!

And inquiring minds (mine for sure) really want to know if you have any Kindle and Kindle Unlimited recommendations?!? You can share below and on any of your social media. Please remember to #readathon #deweymemories or @readathon on Twitter.

Hour 10 – Reading Buddies

Hi, welcome to hour 10!!!

I’m Ellie, you can find me at @ermreading on Twitter, Instagram and Youtube!

One of my favourite things about the bookish community is that we’ve turned the solitary act of reading into, well, community! We have readathons, buddy reading and we’re interacting and meeting new readers all the time.

I love reading with my friends or my faithful reading companion, who’s even with me as I’m writing this, my adorable cat Bae, although she does try and knock books out of my hands when she wants attention!

I was wondering if any of you have a reading buddy with you this time around? Are they a pet? a friend? a family member? buddy reading online? or are you reading solo? Let me know in the comments or over on twitter.

If you’re a solo reader who wants some digital company, you can find me over on the @readathon twitter for the next hour and on my own, @ermreading, for the rest of the readathon. You can also chat to and cheer on your fellow readers on the #readathon twitter or any place people are posting their updates ^_^

Keep happy, keep reading, keep motivated!!!

August 2019, Reverse Readathon

Reverse Readathon Hour 10 – It’s ALSO all about the FOOD

You know, when I start to plan for a readathon, the first thing I DO think of is WHAT WILL I READ? However, it’s quickly followed by WHAT WILL I EAT? Do you have a favorite reading snack? One of my favorite memories growing up is sitting at my kitchen table in my grandparents house, drinking Dr. Pepper and eating Cheetos Cheese Puffs. So, yes, I get that for every Readathon.

I also have a family I have to feed, so I usually cook dinner in the crockpot. This time I’m making Jamaican Jerk Pulled Pork with Caribbean slaw and corn. Honestly cannot wait for that.

So, what will you be having today?

Hour 10 – Tarot & Stories

Hello again, it is STILL reading diva extraordinaire, Julianne. As always, you can find my jokes, things I make, and places I go on Instagram as @_ulianne. I am excited to let you know that we are now TEN FULL HOURS into the readathon, which is nearly halfway through. Amazing job, everyone!!

——

I’m here with a fun and extremely low key activity for you. As a whiny diva, I often need ways to spice up my reading and keep me interested in a book for an extended period of time. SO I decided to try incorporating tarot cards into the situation. NO TAROT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED.

Tarot cards are interesting to me not as any sort of fortune telling, but as representations of different parts of stories and the human experience (I talk more about that in my very skeptical Instagram story highlight titled “Tarot for A**holes”). So, given that we are READING stories, maybe we can try to read them a little more intentionally, especially now that we’re halfway through and maybe getting a little autopilot-y.

THE CHALLENGE

(there is no prize, I’m just trying to have a little fun here)

Hold or think about the book you’re about to start. Draw a random tarot card (you can do so virtually here). Look at the design then Google the card meaning. As you read your book, look out for representations of the theme of that card. Use the card to frame your reading experience in a fresh new way!

See if the card creates connections for you that you may not have found without. See if it draws out themes or images that may have otherwise sat in the background. Is there a character who embodies the card you drew? Are there any symbols from the card design that make subtle appearances in the book? Prepare for potential SPOOKY coincidences – and have fun mixing up your typical reading routine if it starts to feel a little stale!

Hour 10 – Don’t Sweat It

Hello everyone! Welcome to Hour 10 of the Read-A-Thon! Hope you’re all having fun and enjoying your books and the company. Let’s face it, reading books is awesome but also getting to talk about books you love with other people who love books, that’s amazing! It’s a big part of what got me hooked into doing the Read-A-Thon at least four years ago (I’ve honestly lost track of how many I’ve been a part of).

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is to not sweat the page counts during a Read-A-Thon. I can be a painfully slow reader. One time it took me all ‘Thon just to finish one book. It happens. So if you look at your TBR list or think you should be further along than you are, don’t sweat it! The important thing is to have fun.

My general plan for this event is to always have at least one book of every format on hand so I can read wherever or however my mood takes me. It also helps so that, in the event of the unexpected, I am never without a book. Let’s face it, no matter how much we may plan for this to be a day of reading, something comes up. How do you deal with interruptions to your reading plans?

Seriously, though, this event ain’t about stressing yourself. If something comes up or if you’re not reading as much as you thought you would, don’t worry about it. We’re here to have book-based fun and talk with other readers about our mutual love of books. That being said, if you find yourself in need of some motivation, hit us up on Twitter! I’m hosting the @readathon channel right now and I’ll be happy to cheer you on!

Hour 10 – Go Easy On Me!

Hi lovelies,

This is Juli. I’ll be your co-host for the next two hours. This is my first time co-hosting this, so go easy on me. I hope everyone is having as much fun as I do. Of course, I’ve been reading and drinking copious amounts of coffee – such is the life of the book nerd – but I have also been more active on social media this time. I just love seeing everyone’s TBRs, hearing about their snacks and reading nooks, and reading posts on Facebook, Twitter, and in our Goodreads group.

I’d like to take this first post as an opportunity to say thanks, specifically to you! Yes, you, the reader, the participant, the cheerleader, and the organizer. This event would be nothing without every one of you. So, here it comes, that big thank you!

THAAAAAAANK YOUUUUUUU!

So, now tell me what you’re currently reading or working on? Hour 10 is nearing the middle of the readathon, so some of you have already finished at least one book, am I right? I am looking at you speed-readers. If you’re like me, you’re still working on your first novel but have been taking plenty of breaks to sneak in some social media or another coffee. What about you first timers, how is it going for e? Is the readathon everything you dreamed of? Sometimes, I get jealous thinking about that I will never have that feeling of my first readathon ever again ;).

Cass here! Don’t you just love the number ten? 10. Or, if you’re old-timely, X. Either way, it’s glorious, isn’t it? I always think 10 is a great number, but this readathon, it has a special significance.

Ten years of Dewey’s!

This hour, as you:

  1. read
  2. chat
  3. snack
  4. blog
  5. snap

  9. tweet or
  10. all of these and more, revel in the magnificent power of 10 (or, sure, X, that too). You are part of a decade-old event! And you, too, are magnificent. (Yes, you.)

Hour 10 – The TBR Tower

It’s Dana back for another hour of reading fun! I hope you all enjoyed (and did) my little scavenger hunt. I love bookish memes so that was especially fun.

I go into each readathon with a stack of possibilities. I am such a mood reader that I know I won’t stick with a specific TBR list but if I have several to choose from, I will find one that suit my mood. Today I’ve set aside a couple of contemporary YAs because I am trying to expand my reading genres don’t read those often. I also have some graphic novels, a couple of sci-fi and fantasies and a WWII inspired novel. Plus the big shelf of books that I own and never read because library books. 😀

What’s your favorite way to pick books for the readathon? Share with me in the comments and let me know what book is your favorite that you’ve read so far today.

Hour 10 – Because reading is your ONLY priority

fyi-17

Hello again! It’s Allison from The Book Wheel and I’m back again for another hour, so thanks for keeping me around! For those of us with spouses, partners, significant others, kids, or parents living with us, Readathon can be a stressful time. I’m sure most of our others are aware of the fact that books are a priority in life, but when Readathon time comes along, it becomes the ONLY priority in life. After participating in several of these, my husband and I have come to an understanding about how things are going to go down. It is as follows:

  • I spend weeks reminding him that, unless he is offering food or snacks, I am invisible.
  • He is forced to sleep in the spare room because we learned, after the first Readathon, that I have to move around a lot come 2 a.m.
  • Things are easier if he picks up some overtime that day because I always end up audiobooking it and purging/cleaning for a few hours.
  • Dinner is frozen pizza and I am not making it.

This is, of course, easier said than done and is much more doable because we don’t have kids, but I think setting some ground rules ahead of time helps things go more smoothly and prevents unnecessary demands on my time and attention.

Now tell me, what are your ground rule? Do you kick people out of the house? Lock yourself away in a spare room? Head to Starbucks for a few hours to get in some uninterrupted reading time (even though we know you end up people-watching)? Audiobook it while cleaning? I want to know!

Hour 10 – Don’t Lose Your Mind

Hello Readathoners! This is Allison from The Book Wheel and this is my 4th Readathon but my first time co-hosting and I am so excited to be here with all of you. I don’t know about you, but every time the event rolls around I find myself equally excited and wholly unprepared. What will I read? What will I eat? And perhaps more importantly, how do I politely ask my husband to leave me alone for the weekend?

As overwhelming as these questions seem at the time, they are actually quite easy to answer. Whether you’re participating in your first or fourth Readathon, here are my tips to get through it without losing your mind, starving, or ruining your relationships. I promise you – by the end you’ll feel like this:

1. What will I read?

This one is the hardest for me because I’m a mood reader and my Twitter feed is flooded with amazing book recommendations in the days leading up to the event. I’ve learned that it’s perfectly okay to have a TBR list and then toss it aside. Sure, there’s some guilt the first time around but it gets easier, I promise.

2. What will I eat?

I hate to cook so this one is pretty easy – anything that doesn’t require an appliance (although a microwave is okay sometimes). I usually pick up a veggie plate, cheese and crackers, popcorn, and some fruit….. and then eat mostly junk food. Oh, and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. I find that I’m a muncher on Readathon days so anything that I can grab without lifting my head out of the book I’m reading is gold.

3. How do I politely ask people to leave me alone?

Thankfully, most of my friend and family understand that books trump almost everything else. Over the past few Readathons, my husband has learned that it’s probably best to work overtime and sleep in the spare bedroom during the event (3 am reading while munching on popcorn isn’t conducive to good sleep). This year he actually did my snack shopping for me so I think we may finally have a good routine down.

So what about you? How do you decide what to read? Do you toss your TBR aside or do you stick to it? Do you kick friends and family out of the house? And, of course, what’s your go-to snack?
