Hour 1 – Memories

Oh Buzz.

I looked it up last night. I still have the emails between Shesten (the previous host), Andi, and me. Andi and I have co-hosted the Readathon for 7.5 years. That’s around 17 readathons. It feels endlessly long and oh, so short. And I have so many memories.

There was the year the site crashed during the event and almost killed me. The year we had over 3,000 readers and we were still so new that it caused massive (needless) panic. The year we waited until the last minute to get going and Andi ran (almost all) of the shindig on her own. The year she stayed up the whole 24 hours. The year we found out a few authors read with us (I will never tell who, do not ask) and gave away books during the event. The first time we trended on Twitter.

There were endless weeks of prep. Staying up late drafting posts. Begging for prizes, begging for help with cohosting, begging for cheerleaders, making sure all the links worked, and more. Lots of coffee was consumed.

Then there is all the excitement leading up to the event. The plans shared, the many photos of potential reads, your precious reading buddies, menus, snacks, drinks, the times you’ve gotten together with friends and family in your homes and hotel rooms, and the list goes on. It all comes down to the love of reading and who doesn’t get a tear in their eye just thinking of it?

It was all done with love.

Opening Survey is still open.

Hour 1 – Let Me Introduce You to My Friend Dewey

It occurred to me this past couple of weeks, that many, MANY of you did not have the pleasure of knowing Dewey, the wonderful lady who created this event and who we continue to celebrate twice a year.

Dewey: I would give up sleep, food, and conversation with other humans before fiction. I would almost definitely choose being homeless before choosing to be fictionless. I’m thinking about water. That would give me only three remaining days for fiction, but could be worth it.

As you can see from the quote above, she was one of our tribe. She helped create our tribe. If you are or have ever been a book blogger, you have felt her influence whether you knew it or not. She was an early adopter of blogging and she helped create book blogging as we know/knew it. She was a friend and mentor to so many in the book blogging world and Andi and I are so glad to help keep her memory alive. Here’s to Dewey!

Reverse Readathon Hour 1 – EMOCLEW!! Er, Welcome!

via GIPHY

HI THERE READER FRIENDS!!!!!! SO GLAD TO SEE YOU!!!!!

I’m Heather, co-hostess of this here Readathon and I am SO EXCITED for this. We love the Readathon, but the Reverse is special because it’s so laid back and WE GET TO READ TOO. So very very happy about ALL OF THIS.

If you’re new to Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon, you may be wondering, just who is Dewey? Dewey was amazing. An early book blogger, she came up with the magically idea of having a 24 hour period, where we would all get together, world wide, and just drop everything and read.

Dewey, was clearly brilliant.

Unfortunately, Dewey passed away just a few years after she created this event (and many others) and several book bloggers got together to keep it going. Andi and I inherited it a few years ago, and here we are. Thank you, again, for this marvelous day Dewey. We love and miss you!

So opening survey, now (slightly) new and improved!

1)What fine part of the world are you reading from today? And what time is it where you are?

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

4) Do you have a #reversereadathon plan of attack?

5) Are you doing the readathon solo or with others?

Hour 1 – An Ode to Readathon

I can’t remember how long Andi and I have been running the readathon…4? 5 years? It feels like forever and yesterday.

Some run like clockwork. Some are a struggle. This one was a struggle for me. It took me by surprise when October got here and then next thing I knew today was here and I hadn’t done a thing to help.

Andi did it all. All by herself. And I feel like a shit.

I met Andi online about 18 years ago, around the time I got married. We talk every day. We’ve met twice in real like. We practically share a brain. We know each other. And she didn’t say a thing, but shouldered all the work (which, thankfully, is getting easier every year). I feel guilty, yes, but I also know she’s cool. She knows I’ve been busy. She knows I’m still sore from a car accident I had a month ago. She knows that when her life turns upside down, I have her back.

And the book community brought her to me. And I hope the book community brings you such fantastic friends. Thank you, as always, dear Dewey, for starting this twice yearly party for us to celebrate books and each other. Thank you to Kelly for running our Instagram, Liberty for acing our Litsy, Kate for running both GoodReads and Facebook, and Gabby for helping out on GoodReads. Thank you to all our wonderful co-hosts and mini challenge hosts and readers.  Our big and small communities have saved my life this go round. We love you all and you make all this so worth it.
