Hour 17 – (Don’t) Give Up

Hi,

My name is Flavia and I am a reader from Germany. You can usually find me on twitter (and most places) @flaviaaalouise. I’ve been participating in the Dewey’s 24-hour readathon for over 5 years now.

The first time I participated it was quite last minute and I had no idea what I was doing, but a bunch on fun.

As I’ve participated more and more and have been more “successful” I started to put more pressure on myself. To accomplish more and be better.

But that is not always possible. You might not sleep well the night before the readathon. You might have had a stressful week and just not have the power to really read much this weekend. Your mental or physical health might not be as good as you had hoped. Maybe something came up. Maybe you just want to watch TV or spend time with your loved ones.

And if you are the type of person I am that might be frustrating. And to be honest I don’t have the patented recipe to deal with that frustration. But I do encourage you to change your perspective if you are in a situation like that. What can you do to feel better now?

And that might just be to give up and ditch this readathon! I swear it’s fine. This is supposed to be fun. If it doesn’t serve you just get rid of it.

To be honest I am still low-key considering that myself right now (I’m writing this in hour 9, 10 pm my time). As I wrote in the last hour’s post I am defending my Bachelor’s thesis on Monday, I also have quite a bit of cleaning to do and spend the evening at my partner’s parents house. So I have only finished an audiobook I wanted to have finished yesterday already. But let’s see what the night and tomorrow brings. 🙂

Another option is to just change your focus. Focus on self care, Focus on quality time with your partner/fam/animal, Focus on bingeing a book adaptation. Reread some (childhood) faves.

We are still low-key living through the apocalypse. Don’t beat yourself up and if you need someone to hype you up, comment here or join me on twitter for some sprints and fun 🙂

Hour 16 – Inside Out

Hey readers,

I hope you’re doing well. Are you still awake or have you taken a nap?

I will probably have had a good few hours of sleep by now since I actually have to defend my Bachelors thesis on Monday. (Anybody remember how I wrote that during the last round?)

Whichever way you have spend the last 15 hours…. It’s been a while.

How are you feeling? Remember to hydrate and eat. Have you gotten up in the last few hours? Moved your body a little bit?

I encourage you to check in with your body but also your surroundings? Is there still a cup of tea steeping you have forgotten about? What is happening outside? (Most likely darkness I guess)

Maybe open a window and breathe in some fresh air. If it’s an appropriate time wherever you are maybe even go outside. Another typ for when you are feeling the many hours in your bones is taking a shower. (Of course only if it’s possible without disturbing other people.)

Onwards and Upwards

Well, that was fun! I am going back to sleep in a bit, but since I had to get up anyway… The cats were understandably alarmed when, after spending a full 24 hours practically ignoring them to focus on books and the computer (neither is furry or purrs, so they do not see why the human would ever ignore them for such cold, inferior things) their human FELL ASLEEP for a whole 5 HOURS!!!!! No canned food was dished out and no pets or snuggles were forthcoming for all that time after the human set the books down. Things have gotten straightened out a little now, though. Food is in the dishes again, including the evening canned food, and maybe the human will finally put away the stacks of books that have been occupying some of the cats’ auxiliary sitting spots for the past 2 days.

While the cats are distracted with their food, I can pop back online for a quick wrap up post. If you missed it, we just finished our 2021 Reverse Readathon, which ran from 8pm EST yesterday till 8pm EST today (well, Aug 7th. It is midnight now here, technically now the 8th, but you get the idea). Despite some interesting snags relating to transferring account access to the new leadership team (Dewey’s has a LOT of accounts on a LOT of sites now, since every so often a new social media site or tool pops up and gets added to our collection.) we managed to make this readathon happen on time, and from my end it seemed to go pretty smoothly. I had fun and got some good reading time in, and I hope everyone else did too. Thanks, everyone, for being so supportive and patient as we figure out what we are doing.

Our next readathon will be coming up in October. We have not confirmed a date yet, in part because most of our leadership team is catching up on lost sleep at the moment (yes, probably even those with cats), but I’ll be posting our first official October 2021 Readathon announcements very soon.In the meantime, be sure you log your books in our Completed Books database, and if you didn’t during the readathon, check out all the guest posts, discussions and activities on our website, and on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Goodreads. (We also have a Tumblr page again, so if you (still?) use Tumblr be sure to follow our page there. Here, btw, is a linktree with many of our site links all in one place- very handy.

I (Jamie, your ‘fearless leader’, or perhaps ‘first among equals’ Dewey’s host) am really into community building, and there is such a huge potential for community building within the bookish realms of the Internet. So, besides lots of mentions of cats, you can reasonably expect to see frequent posts and activities under my readathon ‘regime’ that encourage everyone to check out each other’s book blogs, etc., and explore all the other bookish resources online. While we are getting set up for our next official event, take some time to explore book groups and pages on Facebook, book blogs on Tumblr, bookish accounts on Twitter and Instagram, and booktubers on Youtube. When you find ones you like, make comments on their posts, follow their pages, and when you’ve read the books they recommend, participate in the discussion about those books. It makes the bloggers and bookish social media people happy when people like their posts and make comments, and all those discussions about books make the authors of the books happier because real people are talking about their books.

But, for now, my cats are fed and snuggling into their sleep spots, and I definitely need to stop yawning and join them for the rest of my post-readathon long nap.

Reverse Read-A-Thon: How To Get Out Of A Reading Slump

Hello Reader and Happy Reverse Read-A-Thon day! It’s me, Mr Geek (from http://www.TreatYoShelf.blo g & @ItMrGeekToYou on Twitter) and I’m here to cheer you on in this read-a-thon and give you some tips to help you bust free from the reading slump that has been holding you back. Earlier this year, I experienced once of my worst reading slumps of all time. I read several very meh books, back-to-back-to-back-to-back and just wasn’t interested in reading. Hopefully these tips can help you get yourself back and track and smash that reading slump. So….

1) Don’t be afraid to abandon a book you aren’t enjoying! This is definitely a “Do as I say, not as I do” tactic. Personally, I have the HARDEST time DNF’ing a book or just putting it down to read something else. I think this was a big contributing factor to my slump earlier this year. You can always go back to your current read some other time when you might be in the mood for that particular story.

2) Switch up your format! If you’re struggling to get through a book, consider getting the audiobook version from the Library, Scribd, Audible or your favorite audiobook service. I’ve found that if I’m struggle to get through a book, listen can really help push me along. I love to read on my Kindle and listen to the audiobook – I usually opt for audiobooks when I’m going for a walk (since my mind can’t really wander to other things). 

3) Try out a new genre! I’ve found this one to be extremely effective for me. I typically read a lot of YA, Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Murder Mysteries / Thrillers / Suspense books. If I’ve been reading a lot of Fantasy or YA, I might flip to a Thriller. Sometimes I even go rogue and branch out into something that I don’t read often, like Literary Fiction or Contemporary. Every genre has a unique writing style. By switching up the type of book you’re reading, you’re automatically getting a different feel, plus the plot will be different than what you are used to. 

4) Consider re-reading a favorite! I had a mild reading slump a few years ago and decided I was going to pick up the first few Harry Potter books. Returning to that world and revisiting some of my favorite characters rekindled my love for reading and definitely got me back on track. 

5) Seek out a new book by one of your favorite authors! I have a few authors that I will auto-buy any book they put out because I just love their writing style and stories (I’m looking at you V.E. Schwab and Christopher Moore). Their novels are always well written, enjoyable and a nice escape from reality.

August 2021 – Reverse Readathon Sign Ups!

Hello and Welcome! The August 2021 Reverse Readathon is at hand! And it’s THIS. WEEKEND!

So quick, tell us, can you read with us? We’re so sorry for the late notice, but, things have been a bit crazy around here. We honestly expect NO ONE to hang out with us the full 24 hours. Who are we kidding? We won’t hang out with us the whole 24 hours! Yet, can you read for an hour? Two? If so, join us! Sign up! Meet us here! Meet us on Twitter! Meet us on Instagram! Apologies

Dewey’s is truly sorry for any harm caused by choosing Harry Potter as a theme for the Reverse Readathon. There was never any intention to hurt anyone or make anyone feel excluded. The reasoning behind trying a theme was to bring something new to the readathon and try to bring in more participants as the last Reverse readathon had half the number of readers as in previous years. The purpose in choosing Harry Potter as a theme stemmed from the love of the story and was in no way in support of the author. This was a mistake and for that we offer our sincerest apologies. Dewey’s denounces any hate or abuse that is directed towards the trans community and never wanted anyone to feel unsafe. 

Upon noting the feedback, it was requested that the readathon be cancelled, as it was not reflective of what Dewey as a person would want. Out of respect for all, the readathon was cancelled. We wanted to hear from the community and allow people to have the space to express themselves and their concerns, but an apology should have been issued sooner.  

As for the comments, please know no comments were deleted.  Dewey’s has always had and will always have a belief in the freedom of speech.  WordPress has some sort of algorithm that automatically approves some comments and puts others into pending that must be processed manually. Unfortunately, this is why certain comments were posted late. All voices should be heard.  

There have been requests for new hosts and we would love for volunteers to take over. If you are still wanting to participate in a readathon over the summer @transathon is hosting a readathon to help support trans and nonbinary authors.

Dewey’s is meant to bring us all together to share in the joy of reading and we hope this will continue for many years to come.

Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon Warm Up: To Persevere or To DNF?

Hello readers! After an extremely busy past couple of weeks, I’m finally getting my reading life back on track (and the timing couldn’t be better)! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Shawn (aka Mr Geek) from http://www.TreatYoShelf.blog where I love to talk about books! This coming weekend (April 24), is next round of Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon! I am thrilled to be returning as a co-host plus I’ll be leading a Twitter party and a mini challenge! I’ve also already picked out my book for the read-a-thon but more on that later!

As we’re all warming up for the read-a-thon, I thought what better time to discuss the somewhat controversial topic of DNF’ing books. For those of you who don’t love acronyms, DNF stands for Did Not Finish. I thought this was a perfect topic to cover in my warm up post because as we’re all settling in for 24 hours of reading, you NEED to enjoy the book you’re reading!

Personally, if I start a book I always finish it. It doesn’t matter if I love it or hate it – I always persevere through until the end. My one little caveat is that I will sometimes “take a break” from a book to read something else, picking up my previously abandoned book here and there to chip away at it as time goes on. I love to write book reviews and feel like I can only do that if I complete the book. I’ve persevered through some really bad books like The Chalk Man by CJ Tudor (funny GoodReads review can be found here). So I’m curious, what’s your take on DNF’ing books? Do you read 25%? 50%? 75%? Before deciding it’s not for you and calling it quits? If you DNF a book, do you still write a review? Do you still give it a rating? Do you still count it towards your GoodReads challenge (for those of you who participate)? I’m really hoping all these questions stimulate some good conversation (also, this is a no judgement zone, if you frequently DNF I applaud you and want to learn your ways)!

Before signing off, I want to briefly talk about the book I selected for the read-a-thon! I was granted an ARC of Riley Sager’s upcoming release, Survive The Night and plan on reading this (hopefully) from start to finish during the read-a-thon. I am an avid thriller reader and am very excited to diving into this book. For those of you who haven’t heard of this book, here’s the synopsis:

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father. Or so he says. Like the Hitchcock heroine she’s named after, Charlie has her doubts. There’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t seem to want Charlie to see inside the car’s trunk. As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

I’ve read several of Sager’s books so far (The Final Girls and Lock Every Door). I find his writing to be engrossing and oh so addicting! This new novel seems eerie, creepy, thrilling and right up my alley! I’ll be posting spoiler-free updates about this book during the read-a-thon and a full length review after I finish! If you’re a fan of thrillers, definitely keep an eye out! Survive The Night will be officially released on June 29, 2021!

Stacking those Short Books

Hello everyone, it’s Kristen from @bookgoil on any socials you can find me on or over at The Book Monsters.

When it comes to building a TBR for the day of the readathon, I always try to mix in some shorter books so I feel like I’m making some movement on my reads. There’s nothing worse than feeling like the day has gone by and you feel your progress is lacking.

Personally, I prefer adding some graphic novels and manga to my mix of reads, but there are other options as well. I’m currently reading Witch Hat Atelier for manga and enjoying it. For graphic novels I always suggest Lumberjanes or Giant Days.

Novellas are a great way to add some short reads, maybe there’s some short stories in a favorite series you haven’t read yet that you can get free or cheap on your e-reader?

Short elementary and middle grade or even picture books with your littles (or for fun on your own) are also another option.

Whether you’re a planner or a pantser, make sure to have some short reads available at hand, they make a nice quick grab if you’re not feeling your current read or need a break from a longer book.

Dewey’s 24 hour Survival Kit

I think part of the fun of Dewey’s 24 hour readathon is the prepping for the readathon.  As a Dewey’s pro I thought I would share with you what I recommend you put in your Dewey’s Survival Kit.

Your TBR Stack.
This really depends on your style it can be a lot of short books, a long book you want to make some headway on, or a mix a books your want to work though. I personally love getting a new book or two from the library or bookstore.  Right now my library only allows us to pick up holds so how’s the time to reserve those books!

Drinks, Drinks, Drinks
The day or two before the readathon I like to go to the store and pick up some treats.  I’m a southern girl so in the spring I love having lemonade and sweet ice tea. Also I highly recommend picking out your cute mugs or cups and having those clean and ready to go (for those twitter or instagram pictures

Meals
I like keeping things simple on the day of the readathon so I’ll stick to things I’ve made beforehand or even simple meals such as sandwiches. I have also ordered pizza one year and that is always a fun treat.

All of the Snacks
I like to have a frozen treat on hand for the April readathon.  Right now I’m loving lime fruit pops. I like having fruit and veggies with humus on hand.  Also a must is some sort of salty snack such as cheese and crackers.

Reading Spot
Get your reading spots ready.  I’m loving reading on my patio right now so part of getting it reading ready is making sure I have a citronella candle ready so I can read at night without being eaten alive.

Treat Yourself
Find some way to pamper yourself.  Whether that’s reading in the bath, using a face mask, or going and getting yourself a fancy coffee find some way to relax.

Way to track your reading.
I will either journey my reading in a vlog or on instagram stories but I’ve also used a plain post it note in the past to keep track of the total number of pages I’ve read and which hours I have finished a book.

Hang out with all your fellow readers on social media throughout the readathon.
You don’t have to pick all platforms but I find instagram and twitter are both popping every year.  #readathon
