Hour 15 – Let’s Talk About Food, Baby

Hour 15!!!!!!!!! This is Andi from Estella’s Revenge making a quick appearance before I come back on the scene in Hours 19 and 20!

swedishchef

Today has been a great day for mini-challenges, #fakefacts, Twitter, and Instagram is on fire! At my house it’s also been a great day for food!

pumpkinpecancobbler

My husband threw a salisbury steak recipe into the slow cooker today, so it was ready to go right around dinner time. We also whipped up this amazing pumpkin pecan cobbler and topped it with some vanilla ice cream. Super easy recipes if you decide to partake.

What was your favorite food you indulged in today (so far)?

Hour 13 – Livin’ on a Prayer

Kerry again from Entomology of a Bookworm, back for a second hour… and Hour 13 no less! WHICH MEANS: you made it to the halfway point!

How’s everyone feeling? How are the books? The snacks? The naps (don’t worry, I won’t tell on you if you napped… I napped. Just not while I was co-hosting.) Tell me everything.

Awesome! Now give yourself a self-five and get back to the reading, but not before stopping by some of the challenges still running, including one hosted by your truly… check out the links below!

I’ll be lingering on the @Readathon twitter for the next hour and reading a bit where I can before handing over the co-hosting reins to Courtney for the next bit of co-hosting.

Go go go, readers!

(Oh, and don’t forget to thank our AWESOME hosts for the Readathon, Andi of Estella’s Revenge and Heather of Capricious Reader. They put so much into this event and it absolutely shows, so let’s show them some appreciation!)

Hour 12 – I’m Really Proud of You

Hey-o, friends! Kerry here from Entomology of a Bookworm, and I’m so excited to be co-hosting for the next two hours.

SO: Hour 12. We approach the halfway point. Some of us have napped, most of us have snacked, all of us have read. Take a minute to get up and stretch your legs and move around a bit. Have a bite to eat (it’s dinnertime in my time zone, after all!).

You do you, folks. No judgement here.

Take the mid-event survey (below) and enter a few of the current mini-challenges.

And then, back to the books!

I will not apologize for an abundance of Parks & Rec gifs.

Hour 11 – You’re ALMOST Half-Way There!

Welcome to Hour 11 everyone!

In honor of the hour, I thought I’d share a couple of my favorite songs with you to give you a moment to refresh as we approach the half-way point of the readathon.

What songs are you listening to this hour? Or are you listening to an audio book?

This is my last hour co-hosting. Thanks for being such wonderful readathoners for the past few hours!  I’ll be hanging out on Twitter for the rest of the night (well, as long as I can make it, anyway), so tweet me a hello!

Hour 10 – 10 Totally Untrue Facts About the Readathon

Cass here again, and guess what? You’ve made it to hour 10! You get a gold star!

57881821

In honor of hour ten, here are 10 facts about the readathon that are completely untrue because I made them up:

  1. Did you know… the 2013 film The Heat was a slightly-fictionalized retelling of the true exploits of our fantastic hosts (and BFFs), Andi and Heather?  tumblr_mxby3aOgBB1s1efqyo1_500
  2. One in 250 readathon participants has shared a cup of tea with Nearly Headless Nick?

    b391dbaf-d43b-42df-b85c-82a9243d89c7
He can’t drink it, of course, but he enjoys it all the same.
  3. The number of incidents of “super paper-cuts” among participants has decreased ten-fold since the advent of steal readers’ hand-protecting gloves.
  4. Trish challenged me to a cheer-off, but I’m too chicken to show up.

    CRdN7dnUkAA9pnN
I don’t mess with Texan cheerleaders. I may be a Yankee, but I’m not DUMB.
  5. The most popular readathon snack is raspberry-banana flavored cheese sticks. Don’t ask me why. I haven’t made that part up yet. (1/2)
  6. In the weeks before Dewey’s 24 hour readathon, grocery stores and markets across the world stock up on sweets, coffee, tea, and of course raspberry-banana flavored cheese sticks, in anticipation of the big event.
  7. We are all one degree of separation from Levar Burton, actor, director, producer, author, and beloved host of Reading Rainbow.

    giphy (2)
    Wait…that one’s true.
  8. The two most popular colors among Super Fans of the readathon are red and blue. (**The highly scientific twitter survey I conducted received two responses. Thank you!)
  9. On the day of the readathon, if you hold a book to your ear, you can hear the sound of a keyboard clicking as an author grumbles.
  10. In a rare unanimous decision, 100% of readathon participants have agreed that this photograph is a classic and have agreed it should be inducted into the Readathon Photograph Hall of Fame. As soon as we create one.

    Yeah!
    Yeah!

Hour 8 – Move it, Move it

Amanda ,again, and it is my last hour of co-hosting. Sad face.

My favorite co-hosting duty is to pick an utterly ridiculous exercise video and encourage folks to get up and move. This one may even be better than prancercise.

Turn on some T. Swift and shake it off. Crank up some Snoop Dogg (erm.. Snoop Lion) and drop it like its hot. Stretch. Drink some water. Rest your eyes. You’ll feel like hell tomorrow if you don’t.

If you don’t want to stop your reading groove then maybe try an audio book or do some stretches while you watch your favorite movie adaptation.

Bottom line: change things up a little or you may give you at the midway point!

Hour 7 – Wrapped Up in Books

Amanda here from Fig and Thistle!

My favorite aspect of read-a-thon is being all wrapped up in books. Not just the reading, but the entire literary love fest. I love planning out my stack, buying snacks, writing the entire day off for bookish pursuits and making new friends who get my readerly ways.

Let me know what you’re wrapped up in today? Is there a particular novel you cannot put down? An audio book or graphic novel that is leaving you riveted? Or maybe you’re excited that so many people are participating and you’re wrapped up in a social media channel chatting away and, most likely, finding new titles to add to you’re TBR list?

Seriously, let me know in the comments. Let’s chat!

Hour 6 – Reading with Kids

My Reading Adventure

Hi! Amanda here from Fig and Thistle! I’ll be your co-host for the next few hours.

I can relate to how that little fellow feels. I cry a bit when I’m trying to read on my lunch-break and I’m constantly interrupted. I just wanna read! Waaahhhh!

That’s my favorite part of read-a-thon, reading for hours on end! I have to remind myself to be kind to my brain, eyes, and body and move around and do other things. Luckily, my kids help me with that! I may stay squirreled away and reading for hours (thanks, husband!) but when I emerge for a break I like to involve my kids in read-a-thon. Okay, I don’t force my teenager, she is doing her thing, but my two little ones Atticus (nearly 5) and Persy Jane (2 1/2) are eager to read, visit the library, watch an episode of Reading Rainbow (streaming on Netflix and Amazon!) and even play read-a-thon.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Here is Atticus prepping his tent for read-a-thon. Stacks of books are ready in the tent and Dr. Doom, Spider-man, and Naked Cabbage Patch Baby are ready to read.

When you feel the need to take a break from reading, think about spending that time prepping the next generation of read-a-thoners! This isn’t just for parents; read to a neighborhood kid, niece, nephew, etc…. Or you could donate some time, books, or money to a literacy group or library.

Remember, read-a-thon is about fostering a community of readers and our little book lovers count!
