Hour 12 – Plot-driven versus Character-driven Books

Hi there,

This is Juli again from ich lese. I thought we could talk about plot-driven versus character-driven books during this hour. Simply as that, do you have a preference? I am a huge mood reader, and while I generally prefer character-driven or language-based stories, I have a real craving for a page-turner once in a while, especially in the winter months or during vacation.

I know, ideally, we have a bit of both, but for this argument, let’s just assume you have to choose one over the other. Give me your thoughts in the comments below! And also give me your examples! This girl needs more books on her TBR 😉

    2. Haven’t finished anything today
    3. Argh! Let me get through this first one, jeez. Lol
    4. Refills on water and snacks, the dog needing to go out and a phone call from my sister have been the only real interruptions, none were a problem.
    5. Honestly? The thought that there are readers out there that may have already completed more than one novel.

  3. Survey Answers:

    1. What are you reading right now?: I am still reading Red Mars. I am basically making my way through the second half of this book today

    2. How many books have you read so far? So far, I haven’t completed reading any books. But I will finally finish Red Mars in this next hour.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? The next book on my list is The Korean War by Bruce Cumings. I’ve been reading it as a part of a Goodreads book club and I am looking forward to finally finishing this one.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Haven’t really had any interruptions at all. I did get a little sleepy not too long ago, so I dealt with it by taking a 20 minute nap.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? Just how quickly the time is going by. I thought today would feel very slow, but it is actually moving quite fast.

    1. What are you reading right now?
    Station Eleven audiobook

    2. How many books have you read so far?
Still on my first. It’s always a slow start for me on Readathon days.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I’m very curious whether I can handle it. I’m not a horror reader but kinda enjoy gothic thrillers, but I really don’t know what the original story is like.

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I always sleep during the first part of the event and work through the second half, but this time I’ve been able to get some reading in early, too.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I’ve not seen as much engagement on the mini-challenges. When I first joined @deweysreadathon they were highly competitive and such fun distraction. They’re still fun, but the engagement seems lower. Or maybe it’s just too early in the event for people to engage with that.

  6. . What are you reading right now? Crazy Rich Asians
    2. How many books have you read so far? Just this one, this book has a lot of chapters divided into 3 parts.
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Redesigning Happiness by Nita Brooks
    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I have had to take many breaks in between reading because I’m taking care of my baby at the same time. Taking the interruptions in stride, a chance to relax my eyes and I’m keeping him entertained by reading out loud.
    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? How long it has taken me to get through this book. I didn’t realize it was so long.

If I had to choose I would go for books that are more character driven. I love books with well fleshed out characters that pull you in.

    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
I guess I could say all of them 🙂

    4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
Not at all, a couple of friends came to my house but took my boyfriend to a bar to see a friend playing there, so it was only having dinner with them and that took around 30 minutes.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I am still awake! And I have been able to distribute my time between reads and being online.

    1. I’m still plodding slowly through My Freshman Year, an anthropology book about the American undergrad experience in the early Noughties
    2. Just this one! It’s been an EXTREMELY casual readathon for me so far.
    3. I’d quite like to get back to Me Before You. I’m about halfway through and I really want to finish it before November, so now would be the perfect time – and it’s a quicker read too!
    4. Lots and lots and lots of interruptions. Family members, cats, headaches, a movie, the urge to play games on my phone… But I HAVE made time to actually read more than usual, which is what matters.
    5. No surprises here, really. I AM liking the Instagram participation, there seem to be a few more people knocking around on there than there were last time I took part!

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
Every time I can never talk anyone into joining in with me but I get a lot of family and friends following my progress posts across the day and supporting me. Never thought they’d all be so interested.

    5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I’m always surprised when I don’t make it past my usual bedtime. I’m semi-retired, and don’t have to work until Tuesday. Still, I think it’s best for me to get some sleep right now.
