Reverse Readathon Hour 24

This is it folks! The final hour! Give yourselves a pat on the back or a high five! Whether you’ve been reading the full 24 hours or only here and there, you deserve it! Y’all have done amazing!

More important than anything, I do hope you’ve had fun. Then again, what could be more fun than spending a day reading books and talking to other readers about books? It’s all about the books. I do hope you’ve gotten to read some good ones and have had some good discussions. Some of my favorite Readathon moments are from sleep-deprived silliness shared with others.

There is still one last hour of reading, but I know you’ll be able to pull it off. Grab out those comic books or light reads to help you out. You don’t want to make my mistake of reading the same sentence three times without realizing it!

After that, you can input the books you’ve finished into the spreadsheet and answer the closing survey questions. But you don’t have to do them right away. Feel free to get some sleep first! And as you go to sleep this day, I hope you have pleasant dreams about books and book related topics.

Closing Survey!

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!
3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners?
4. How did you feel about this first-ever Reverse Readathon? Should we do it again?
5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep in October?

Reverse Readathon Hour 22

I’m Deb Nance at Readerbuzz and I’m here to push you through to the end.

I’ve got five more tips to help you make it to the end. Try one or more of these if you are feeling tired.

  1. Bring out the tea or coffee. How about an espresso?
  2. Grab a snack.
  3. Choose an uncomfortable spot to read. Sit on the floor. Stand up for a few minutes.
  4. Chew some ice.
  5. Set down the book and cruise to the end with an audiobook. Aren’t prepared with an audiobook? There are thousands available for free at LibriVox.

You’ve almost made it! Fabulous job! Keep going and good luck!

Reverse Readathon Hour 20

Gracious alive! It’s Hour 20. How are you doing? Are you going to make it? Do you need a little help in the home stretch?

I’m Deb Nance at Readerbuzz and I’ve prepared ten last-minute tips to get you through these last few hours. I’ll share five with you this hour and five during Hour 22.

    1. Open a window and let the cold air in. Or, if you are in a warmer climate (like moi) turn the air conditioner down five degrees.
    2. Take a five-minute break. Move. Try Instant Recess.
    3. Take a shower.
    4. Turn on all the lights in the house.
    5. Turn on music.

You’ve made it this far. Keep going. Don’t give up now. I’ve got your back.

Reverse Readathon Hour 18

Hey, it’s me again, Janani from The Shrinkette. It’s a little past midnight, and I’ve just brewed a pot of tea ( i.e. dumped a teabag in a mug of hot water) because my system requires a caffeine boost. How’s everyone doing so far? Are you enjoying this chilled out readathon? How’s the reverse timing working out in your timezone? Read anything amazing today?

I want to take a minute here to cheer you all for being here and participating in the readathon today. Whether you’ve read 18 minutes or 18 hours, you’re here, and I’m rooting for ya.

Now, let’s talk comics. Or graphic novels. Or sequential art. Or all of the above. I love throwing in comics into my readathon TBR, it makes for such a nice break in format and brain space. Today, I’m catching up on the last few volumes of Ms. Marvel

I love this series so much, it’s so full of heart and shenanigans, and I’m super excited for her appearance in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.

I’m always looking for fun comics that feature cool protagonists that aren’t just dudes beating up on each other. If you’re a comics reader, let me know which ones you’re reading in the comments below! I’d love to add more to my list (not like my TBR isn’t overflowing or anything).

Also taking a moment to shoutout our wonderful hosts Andi and Heather for putting together this special edition of readathon. To paraphrase Leslie Knope, y’all are beautiful rainbow infused space unicorns. Thanks for all you do.

Okay readers, let’s rally. Only 6 more hours to go!

Reverse Readathon Hour 16

Hey there, book lovers from across the globe,

I hope everyone is enjoying this awesome upside-down, absolutely-crazy, extra-extra, reverse readathon?! I definitely am. I love switching things up, especially when it comes to reading. I am a total mood reader and must, must, must have tons of books to choose from at all times.

Lately, I’ve been expanding to audiobooks (and I am really starting to appreciate their utility) and to new genres including non-fiction. So, since I am on this kick of reading celebrity memoirs, self-help books, and political commentaries, I thought we could dedicate hour 16 to the non-fiction branch of the book tree.

What is a memorable non-fiction book that you would recommend a newbie entering that genre? What’s your all-time favorite non-fiction literary piece and why?

I’ll start this party off with my choices! I highly recommend Tina Fey’s memoir Bossypants. I listened to the audiobook version and Tina reads it and that just does all kinds of good things to the book and would be great for someone just dipping their toe in the non-fiction lake. The cover art also immediately drew me to her book – it’s just so deliciously weird and made me feel so amazingly awkward (those arms and hands!) My next recommendation is We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It’s a quick read that hits with a punch! Along the same lines, I loved Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates although that was not quite that quick of a read for me. Both books deal with different social issues, but both are just utterly important and so, so relevant – and yes, both will make you feel uncomfortable at times and will make you really think.

So, how is everyone doing with hour 16? Still going strong? Gimme me your non-fiction book recommendations!

Cheers,

Juli

Reverse Readathon Hour 14

Hey, this is Janani from The Shrinkette. I’m super enjoying the reverse readathon timing, it works great in my timezone. It’s about 8.30 PM here in Bangalore, and I’m just about ready to stuff my face with dinner while listening to an audiobook.

By this point in the day most of us have done a fair bit of reading, made headway into books in our stack, and that fatigue is starting to creep up on us. So it’s time to shake things up with your body and make that sluggishness go bye-bye! You can stand up and shake your arms and legs, take a short walk with an audiobook (even if that means just walking around your house), do some deep breathing or yoga to get that oxygen flowing to your brain, or my favorite- 60 second dance party! Crank up a favorite tune and shake that booty, it makes such a difference.

Works even better if you have a readathon partner. So get up, shake it off, and dive back into your book! Happy reading y’all!

Reverse Readathon Hour 12

Hour 12! Hour 12! WE’RE HALFWAY! This is Andi from Estella’s Revenge again, and I can’t believe how time flies. I know I say that a lot, but it’s true here and in life. I’m not sure about you, but flipping the time on the Readathon has REALLY made it fly! I slept a few hours, but I’m back and ready to read. Coffee has been had, and I’m on to an audiobook…DREAD NATION by Justina Ireland!

What are you reading now?

Reverse Readathon Hour 9

Kendra here again! It’s 4am here, which is always a strange time to be awake, but no matter where you live, I suspect we’re all hitting that wall. You know the one I mean, that moment when things start blurring together as your stare into the depths of your caffeinated beverage of choice.

For those us struggling, I want to know, what are your strategies for staying awake during a readathon? Do change up what you are reading? Do snacks/caffeine help you out? (I obviously am in that last camp. 😉 )

But hang in there! So many wonderful books await! Happy Reading. ❤

Reverse Readathon Hour 7

Hello All! Kendra from Reading Women here. How’s everybody doing?

It’s 2am here on America’s east coast, and since we started at 8pm this time around, I feel like I’m just hitting my stride. As a night owl, I enjoy settling in with a good book at this time of night, the quiet surrounding you like a warm blanket. Sometimes, I still stay up all night to finish a book. So in the spirit of late-night reading, I thought I would share some of the books that I’ve read through the night.

Most recently, I’ve read:

  • The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert, a fairytale- inspired, whirlwind of a story,
  • The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, a Russian fairytale-inspired story (I’m sensing a theme here),
  • and Emily Bitto’s Stella Prize-winning novel The Strays.

While all of these books involve different settings and time periods, each of them features a young, female protagonist coming of age. I definitely have a type. 😉

Now that you’ve learned about my kryptonite, what are you reading?! Are there any particular books you find yourself staying up all night read?

Hang in there, everyone! xx

Reverse Readathon Hour 5

Hi everyone! It’s Elizabeth here from Earl Grey Editing. I’m super excited to be participating in this reverse readathon. For once, I started when it was actually daylight outside! There’s still daylight outside, but it has been a few hours and it has me a bit like:

Someone tell that koala it dropped its book!

It’s the middle of the night or early hours of the morning for those of you in other parts of the world. How are you coping? Are you finding the timing of the readathon especially challenging or are you sailing through? I’d love to hear about how you’re going!

Whenever the readathon runs its usual hours, I’m totally shameless about sleeping through the first eight hours. I’m all here for getting through as many books as possible, but getting enough sleep is crucial for me unless I want to be more like:

I swear she’s just yawning!

And that’s not fun for anyone. So, please take care of yourself, however that looks for you. And, if you feel comfortable, let us know how you’re doing it! You never know who you might help out.

Happy reading, everyone!
