Hour 17 – Energy Drinks and GIFS!

Woo! We’re getting so close to that finish line! How’s everyone doing? Still having a good read? Having fun chats with other readers? Who else has been on a caffeine binge? Can you tell I’ve just had an energy drink? ^_^

So, I’m a fan of some YouTube gamers and one of their games posed the problem of getting to live in the fantasy world of your choice, but you’d have to be a villain! Would it be worth it? It got me thinking about the various worlds I’ve read and which ones I’d be okay with being a villain in. To be honest, I’m not sure there are any! Then again, the question never said anything about being the kind of villain who got caught. You could even just be the kind of “villain” who actually pushes the protagonist into becoming the hero!

I’m of a mixed mind about it. Would you make the choice to live in the realm of your choice, but as the villain? Would it be worth it? What loopholes can you think of to make it more of a Wreck-It-Ralph kind of scenario?

I understand if that’s a bit too much to think about right now. It’s late and we’ve got more reading, cheering and chatting to do! Speaking of which, YOU’RE DOING A GREAT JOB! WHOOO! Keep it up!!

Hour 16 – There Were Superpowers Involved

Hello everyone! Salutations! Greetings! May the Force be with you! My name is Rachel Noel and I am gonna be your co-host for the next few hours.

I’ll admit, I do enjoy my sci-fi and fantasy novels and I’ve noticed a bit of a common theme amongst them. Well, at least where superpowers are involved. Whatever powers the character receives are pretty much based on their personality. When I think about it, if it were to happen to me, I’d end up with a reading based super power! Can you imaging what that would look like?

I’ve actually come up with a few and I’m curious, which of these reading based super powers would you want?

  1. Every time you open a book and start reading, time stops. It restarts again when you’re no longer reading.
  2. You can read super fast with no loss of enjoyment, comprehension or engagement.
  3. You can always open a book to exactly the passage or page you’re looking for.
  4. You always know what book someone needs to read, even if it’s a book you’ve never heard of.
  5. The ability to read and understand books, regardless of the language they’re written in.

I know these aren’t exactly the most fantastical of powers. Some books have it so you can just reach in and grab an item from a book. Others let you travel through books! But I kinda wanted to keep it based on the actual action of reading. By all means, if you think of others, please let me know!

In the meantime, keep enjoying your reading! If you’re getting tired, don’t worry about staying up the full time. The important thing is that you’re having fun. That being said, if you need a second wind, just let us know! We’ve got cheerleaders at the ready to encourage you on!

Hour 15 – Fabulous Feasts

Welcome back, everyone! This is your co-host Elizabeth from Earl Grey Editing. It’s my last hour here and then I’ll be handing over to Rachel Noel from Purple Owl Reviews. She has some great posts lined up, so make sure you stick around for those.

It’s just going on midday in Australia, which means it’s time for lunch. No matter what time zone you’re in, make sure you stop to have a good meal at some point. It can be tempting to just keep snacking and turning the pages. But more often than not, you’ll feel better for some proper food, even if it means a quick break.

And if you’re super enthusiastic and prepared, consider something themed: a Mad Hatter’s tea party, perhaps, or a Game of Thrones feast. If that’s too much of a stretch for today (there are books to read, after all!), there’s always the next readathon in October.

Have you got any favourite recipes you like to use during the readathon? I’d love to hear!

Hour 14 – Hanging in

Hi everyone! It’s Elizabeth here from Earl Grey Editing. I’ll be your co-host for the next two hours. Hour 14 is just getting underway, so there’s only another ten to go! Are you hanging in there?

No matter what time zone you’re in, you’ve likely been reading for a while by this point. If you’re having trouble concentrating or even just keeping your eyes open, changing your location can help. Even shifting from the couch to the bed and back can make a difference.

It’s late morning in Australia. The autumn weather is a touch chilly, but it’s a nice, clear day. I’ll be grabbing the hammock and a blanket, and retreating to the backyard. If I’m lucky, there might even be company.

Hour 13 – Comparing is for the birds

Dana here back for Hour 13! I loved all the funny memes and gifs you all posted in the last hour. Awesome job, you guys! This readathon is all about fun!

Because it’s all about fun, this is a friendly reminder not to compare your reading to someone else’s reading. Seeing someone’s update that they just finished book #6 and you’re just barely half way through book #2 and feeling a bit badly? Who cares?! You are both reading! Any reading is good reading, right? Amirite? Spoiler alert…I am right! Enjoy the day even if you can’t read the whole day or you’re slower than the other person. It’s supposed to be fun.

So tell me…how’s hour 13 going? Hanging in there? Need some water or a healthy snack? What about needing to give up a move a bit?

I am passing the blog over to Elizabeth. Thanks so much for playing along with me today! I’ve had so much fun talking to you all here and on Twitter!

Enjoy the rest of your reading!

Hour 12 – Halfway There Laugh Break!

Hey, y’all! I’m Dana and I will be with you for the next couple of hours. Can you believe that we are already at hour 12?! Time flies when you’re having fun.

I’ve been a co-host many times now and my favorite post I have ever done and the one that has gotten the most participation is the funny bookish memes post. So show me your best funny meme that has anything to do with reading, books, marathons etc. Here are a couple that I love.

Mid-Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now?
2. How many books have you read so far?
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

Hour 11 – Mark your books

Hi there,

Juli here again. It’s my second hour with y’all and I think it’s time to talk about bookmarks!

By the way, I don’t actually think of bookmarks as quitter strips. They’re more like pausers to me. So, how do you mark the page in your books? Do you have fancy bookmarks? Handcrafted bookmarks? Origami-folded ones (yes I’ve seen those!)? Do you use the Dewey’s readathon bookmark? Or do you, gasp, fold the page and go all dog-eared on that book?

I personally do not dog-ear my books. Well, I have one exception so far. I started reading Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks a while ago and there are all these beautiful pictures of typewriters, so I marked those spots because I just love looking at them. I do have quite the collection of bookmarks as well. There is a spoon that was somehow fashioned into a bookmark, a creepy Pennywise bookmark (I so bought that when I was reading It), several magnetic ones (and oh do they come in handy), and a rubber band one that has a little hand to even indicated what line I stopped at. And yes, I basically use anything else as a bookmark as well: receipts, other scraps of paper, I even once used un uncooked spaghetti.

I can’t wait to hear all about your ways to mark a page! This co-hosting stint was really fun. Be sure to check out my blog or follow me on Twitter (@evilbibliotaph).

Hour 10 – Go Easy On Me!

Hi lovelies,

This is Juli. I’ll be your co-host for the next two hours. This is my first time co-hosting this, so go easy on me. I hope everyone is having as much fun as I do. Of course, I’ve been reading and drinking copious amounts of coffee – such is the life of the book nerd – but I have also been more active on social media this time. I just love seeing everyone’s TBRs, hearing about their snacks and reading nooks, and reading posts on Facebook, Twitter, and in our Goodreads group.

I’d like to take this first post as an opportunity to say thanks, specifically to you! Yes, you, the reader, the participant, the cheerleader, and the organizer. This event would be nothing without every one of you. So, here it comes, that big thank you!

THAAAAAAANK YOUUUUUUU!

So, now tell me what you’re currently reading or working on? Hour 10 is nearing the middle of the readathon, so some of you have already finished at least one book, am I right? I am looking at you speed-readers. If you’re like me, you’re still working on your first novel but have been taking plenty of breaks to sneak in some social media or another coffee. What about you first timers, how is it going for e? Is the readathon everything you dreamed of? Sometimes, I get jealous thinking about that I will never have that feeling of my first readathon ever again ;).

Hour 9 – Get Moving

As wonderful as books are, when you’re trying to spend 24 hours reading, it’s important to make sure you get up and move around every once in a while. It’s dance break time!

I’m sure your pet friends will make it difficult to get up. But they can participate, too! Maybe you have a snake who can do the twist or a cat who can salsa and you want to record it and send the video to me directly asap. I hear, but have not confirmed, that children are also cute when they dance.

What song makes you get up and dance?

Thanks again for hanging out with me for a couple of hours! Be sure to find me on Twitter @bonjourcass and on Goodreads @bonjourcass. Enjoy the rest of the ‘thon, friends–may you read all the books and eat all the snacks.

Hour 8 – Book Friends Are the Best Friends

Hi everyone, and welcome to hour eight of the readathon! It’s me, your old friend, Cass de bonjour. One of my favorite things about the readathon is that it is run by two people who are not only extremely well organized and smart and talented and good at the internet, but who are also best friends. I think their long-lasting friendship creates a wonderful foundation for the rest of us to celebrate the friendships we’ve grown and created–and are creating, right now!–during the ‘thon.

There’s something about readathon day that removes the usual boundaries from talking to strangers.  I originally found my way to the book blogging community through the spring readathon in 2009. I continue to participate because I love knowing that for 24 hours twice a year, I can talk about books and snacks and cute animals to any of 1,800+ people who love reading so much they’ll set aside an entire day for it.

Books and book people are the best, aren’t they? My challenge to you this hour is to comment or reply or like a post from someone you don’t already follow. Team friendship!
