Hour 21 – Battle of the Genres… Survivor Edition

Hi Readathoners! This is Kate from Kate’s Book Nook. I am going to be with you for the rest of this wonderful ride! I’ve been co-hosting this time slot for several years now. I love it. I also moderate the Dewey’s Readathon Facebook and Goodreads group and have loved talking to so many of you in the lead up to this readathon (as well as over the years that I have moderated those groups). If you haven’t joined them, you really should. So much fun!I love getting to know all of you.  So let me tell you a bit about myself. I am 28 years old and live in Northern California. I am a lover of books from all genres (currently going through a historical fiction phase). I am also an avid cross stitcher, crocheter, and quilter (thank goodness for audiobooks that allow me to combine hobbies. This year alone, I have already listened to over 50 audiobooks).  I am a huge fan of cheese (Fontina, Harvati, and Gouda were on the plate today) and I like some salami to go with it. But one time I put peanut butter (another favorite food) on a saltine cracker and then put some cheese on that… it was so good. And now that you know some about me, I would love to get to know you. So leave a comment and tell me about yourself and your hobbies.

I want to take a moment and thank all of the wonderful people who have put aside some of their reading time and done some cheerleading today. You all are like a breath of fresh air. Just when one is beginning to get tired and weary and it seems like you might want to quit, you pop up with a word of encouragement. I know we didn’t have official cheerleaders and so we have all had to step up to the plate and do some cheering on our own. Thank you for taking a bit of your time and doing that today.

Battle of the Genres – Survivor Style

Anyone who has been around for the final hours knows that I love to do random facts of the hour every hour. But last October I decided to mix things up and host an election of book genres to determine who would reign over all the other genres. And the winner was… FANTASY. This election was a big hit and many of you asked if it would be repeated again. So I have decided to bring it back… only with a slight twist. This time you will be voting on your LEAST FAVORITE genre and whichever ones receive the most votes will be eliminated (think of the tv reality game show Survivor where you vote people off the island). The last genre standing will be crowned the winner of the Battle of the Genres.  The contestants (16 of the top genres according to goodreads) are up for vote. They have made their cases and now you, the members of the jury, have to decide who does not deserve to move on. After each round of voting half of the contestants will continue to the next round and half will be eliminated. I will tally the votes at quarter to the hour so I have time to make the next poll. You are allowed to select up to 8 options. This will function on the honor system as I don’t have a way to control that. But please, respect the system. No cheating for the genre of your choice. I hope that you all enjoy this and don’t take it too seriously. It is all meant to be in good fun.

  1. My name is Paula, I am 42 years old and live on the Southwest Washington coast with my dog, Bogart, and cat, November. Aside from my untreated reading addiction, I also enjoy cooking, watching great movies and travel (whenever I can afford it.).

    1. Hi Paula! Washington is a place I would like to visit. I’ve drive from Portland to Central California before, but haven’t made it to Washington.

    1. Thanks for participating. It is a lot of fun. I hope that by doing it this way, we might shake some things up and maybe have some upsets.

  2. I have far too many hobbies, which is why I needed a dedicated reading marathon to focus on my books! I also crochet, sew, make jewelry and do misc crafts. I am learning to play guitar and I play flute/trumpet. There is also my tv and video game obsession to deal with. And for fun I have some side jobs working at an auction house on their auction days and volunteering at a bar’s beer school weekly to learn about craft beers.

    1. Katie – I sorta play the flute. I took it throughout Middle school and high school but haven’t played anything in a few years.
