Hour 24 – The final 60 Minutes…

FYI (26)

Welcome to Hour 24!!! This is Kate from Kate’s Book Nook. I will be your co-host for the final hour. We have made it, ya’ll. We have done this!!!! As per my traditions (I have a lot of traditions) I have included the video for We Are the Champions because, to me, if you have even read for just five minutes, you are a participant and you have done a good job! I am so proud of you. I really hope that you will all be back to join us in October.

As a final thank you, I want to thank you, the readers, for participating in this event. We couldn’t do it without you. I sincerely mean that. Without you all signing up and participating and sharing this event with others, we never would have had an event to begin with. Thank you for coming back and reading books and making this possible. I really do hope to see you next time.

Now, let’s do these last 60 minutes proud and read until the last second!

Random Shakespeare Fact of the Hour

Anyone who has ever made these late night hours knows that I love to include random facts of the hour. So here is the Shakespeare fact of the hour:

William Shakespeare’s works contain more than 600 references to various types of birds, from swans and doves to sparrows and turkeys. The starling—a lustrous songbird with a gift for mimicry, native to Europe and western Asia—makes just one appearance, in “Henry IV, Part 1.” In 1890 an American “bardolator” named Eugene Schiffelin decided to import every kind of bird mentioned in Shakespeare’s oeuvre but absent from the United States. As part of this project, he released two flocks of 60 starlings in New York’s Central Park. One hundred twenty years later, the highly adaptable species has taken over the skies, becoming invasive and driving some native birds to the brink of extinction.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

When do the mini-challenges actually end? I was worried that they ended within their specific time frames, which would take away a lot of my readathon fun. But if they all ended after Hour 24, that would be great. I am always so sad to miss challenges while I sleep but I can always catch up when I wake up.

Also, I felt like there were not that many BookTubers involved, which also made the experience less fun for me.

What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

I love the challenges. I love the twitter involvement. I love the motivation for prizes. I wish there were even more opportunities for prizes.

How many books did you read? Which book did you enjoy most?

    I completed 2, I DNFed 4, and I started 5 more.

What were the names of the books you read?

    Completed/Enjoyed Most
Unbelievable (PLL book 4) by Sara Shepard
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

    Hesitation Wounds by Amy Koppelman
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente
The History of Love by Nicole Krauss (I think this was the best of this bunch, though)

    Started
Sailor Moon, volume 2, by Naoko Takeushi
Fruits Basket, volume 2, by Natsuki Takaya

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

100% likely. I think I would like to run a mini-challenge myself one day but I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet. Maybe 2+ years from now.

Um. Probably the last hour because I finished my TBR with 40 minutes to go and had to find a new book.

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

Pretty much any graphic novel. I read soundless which was quite engaging.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

    Not really?

What were the names of the books you read?

    Help for the Haunted
    The Sandman volume 1

    Mad Max part 1
    Pride and Prejudice
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Which book did you enjoy most?

    Probably Soundless

    Which did you enjoy least?

Will say mad max only because it was so short and I wanted more!!

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

Yup! Definitely participating again. Probably just as a reader.

  15. Hours 20&21 were tough, I put an audiobook on and walked around the house. I enjoy books like The Woman Upstairs & You Should Have known. They keep you on the edge of your seat. As far as improvements, I thought it was great the way it was. I really loved the cheerleaders and i also enjoyed cheering people along the way. I finished 5 books and I enjoyed them all. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Probably 18ish because I was getting tired.

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
Legend by Marie Lu (just the first book), Harry Potter (especially the early shorter books) always flys by, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson, and Angelfall by Susan Ee.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

Swapping between twitter/goodreads hosts, made it so that people were always here and engaged.

Finished one but read part of 2 other books.

What were the names of the books you read?
Giant Days, Vol. 1, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Fellside.
Which book did you enjoy most?
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the even though it’s a reread it put me in such a good mood for the read-a-thon.

    Which did you enjoy least?
Giant Days, Vol. 1 While I did overall enjoy it, I just had some mixed feelings as well. (My expectations were also very high after hearing people say it was their new favourite graphic novel series.)

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
Very likely! I’ve participated in the past 3, I hope to continue doing so. I will be just reading, unless it’s a really busy/off day where I wouldn’t be able to read much. Then I’d probably mostly be a cheerleader and focus on the social aspect.

  18. 1 Which hour was most daunting for you?
Around Hour 8, where my husband was starting to realize I was serious about him not bothering me, I had finished one book and was deciding on my next.
2 Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
I saw several on people’s TBR piles that I found interesting, so I am going to look for them in the future. So my TBR pile didn’t shrink at all.
3 Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?
The multiple social media platforms were a bit confusing. I didn’t see any cheering for my “team” on twitter but I may have missed it. I did follow and chat with other people participating, on both twitter and facebook. The mini challenges were strange. I did a couple. Reading instructions, making a post, linking or taking a picture, posting somewhere, then proving the post was complicated and happened across multiple platforms.
4 What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
Everyone posting their TBR, pets and places was really interesting. I really like that we all did the same 24 hours, starting and finishing together.
5 How many books did you read?
2 books, 3 graphic novels, began a few things, tons of Internet postings.
6 What were the names of the books you read?

I liked them all, they were all different from each other.

  21. I didn’t sign up because I knew I wasn’t going to stay up all night. But I did get in 18 hours. It was lovely to spend the day reading. I’m ADD and usually read at night so I’m less distracted but I ignored the garden calling my name, the house groaning with demands for attention and even read in the car at the grocery store while my German exchange student found what she needed to make cookies for someone. I finished NeuroTribes, an amazing book about autism that I heartily recommend – great writing; finished Destroyer Angel by Nevada Barr, engrossing notwithstanding the amount of death this time; started and finished Out of the Night by Don Latus, with a good twist near the end; and started and finished Heartsick by Chelsea Cain – not sure I’ll read another of hers due to the amount of graphic violence. (I’m a mystery reader, mostly.) I totally forgot about the social media aspect so just read away all day and night! If I had planned to stay up all night, I might have used that more. Thanks for the effort!

Which hour was most daunting for you?

By the 23rd hour I was ready to fall asleep and my brain hurt.

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

The Library at Mount Char was a thrilling but really long. It was perfect since I was just finishing it up during Dewey’s.

In general, graphic novels are great for readathon. Nimona is probably one of the quickest books I have read lately.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

Bouts of Books has a group twitter chat which is so much fun. Since, Dewey’s is only 24hours maybe a twitter chat the day before?

    1. Library at Mount Char

    2. When breath becomes Air

    3. Black Panther #1

    4. Big little Lies

    5. The Rebellious life of Rosa Parks.

They are really too different to say what I enjoyed most or least. Library of Mount Char was the most enjoyable in a fun sense. Rosa Parks is the most enjoyable is a relatable way. When Breath becomes Air is the most meaningful.

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

I will do it again as a reader. But how many hours I will read depends on what I plan on doing for my anniversary the next day.
