Welcome to Hour 24!!! This is Kate from Kate’s Book Nook. I will be your co-host for the final hour. We have made it, ya’ll. We have done this!!!! As per my traditions (I have a lot of traditions) I have included the video for We Are the Champions because, to me, if you have even read for just five minutes, you are a participant and you have done a good job! I am so proud of you. I really hope that you will all be back to join us in October.

Random Shakespeare Fact of the Hour
Anyone who has ever made these late night hours knows that I love to include random facts of the hour. So here is the Shakespeare fact of the hour:
William Shakespeare’s works contain more than 600 references to various types of birds, from swans and doves to sparrows and turkeys. The starling—a lustrous songbird with a gift for mimicry, native to Europe and western Asia—makes just one appearance, in “Henry IV, Part 1.” In 1890 an American “bardolator” named Eugene Schiffelin decided to import every kind of bird mentioned in Shakespeare’s oeuvre but absent from the United States. As part of this project, he released two flocks of 60 starlings in New York’s Central Park. One hundred twenty years later, the highly adaptable species has taken over the skies, becoming invasive and driving some native birds to the brink of extinction.

I would like to take a moment to thank the wonderful hosts of this event, Andi and Heather. These are two of the most amazing people in the history. They spend nearly the full year planning the event for us and taking care of things that occurred after the last event (like survey results and prizes). Without all their hard work, this event wouldn’t be half the one it is. Thank you, ladies. We all owe you so much!
Random Shakespeare Fact of the Hour
Anyone who has ever made these late night hours knows that I love to include random facts of the hour. So here is the Shakespeare fact of the hour:
Our notion of William Shakespeare’s appearance comes from several 17th-century portraits that may or may not have been painted while the Bard himself sat behind the canvas. In one of the most famous depictions, known as the Chandos portrait after its onetime owner, the subject has a full beard, a receding hairline, loosened shirt-ties and a shiny gold hoop dangling from his left ear. Even back in Shakespeare’s time, earrings on men were trendy hallmarks of a bohemian lifestyle, as evidenced by images of other Elizabethan artists. The fashion may have been inspired by sailors, who sported a single gold earring to cover funeral costs in case they died at sea.

Anyone who has ever made these late night hours knows that I love to include random facts of the hour. This year, due to it being Shakespeare week, I’ve decided to do Shakespeare Random Facts. Your one for this hour is:
Sources from William Shakespeare’s lifetime spell his last name in more than 80 different ways, ranging from “Shappere” to “Shaxberd.” In the handful of signatures that have survived, the Bard never spelled his own name “William Shakespeare,” using variations or abbreviations such as “Willm Shakp,” “Willm Shakspere” and “William Shakspeare” instead. However it’s spelled, Shakespeare is thought to derive from the Old English words “schakken” (“to brandish”) and “speer” (“spear”), and probably referred to a confrontational or argumentative person.

This is Kate from Kate’s Book Nook and I will be your cohost for the remainder of this event! Let me tell you a bit about me. I am 27 and live in Nor-Cal (Northern California). I am a cross stitching addict and I have no intention of entering recovery. I also love quilting and am in the middle of 4 projects with a fifth planned. This is only noteworthy because I only learned how to quilt last spring.
This year, I had family from out of the country come and visit. This includes my adorable 16 month old nephew. So needless to say, I didn’t get much reading done. I did read him Goodnight Moon… I had a lot of fun today, but I will have to make up the reading portion on another day.
I want to take a moment and thank all of the wonderful people who have signed up and done some cheerleading today. You all are like a breath of fresh air. Just when one is beginning to get tired and weary and it seems like you might want to quit, you pop up with a word of encouragement. So thank you for taking a bit of your time and doing that today.

It’s Andi again with something to confess. I took an hour-long nap before my hosting time! I admit it!!!! I hope you did, too, because I know I’m refreshed. When it was time to wake up, though, I wanted an upbeat song to put me back in motion, so I had to call on my trusty workout song as of late, “Gave Me Something” by Jess Glynne!
Now that we’re a little more awake and doing a chair dance, I just want to thank you for being a part of this event. We sure do love having you, and let’s face it, without you it’d just be a bunch of looking around at each other and playing with a website.

I did wreck these eyes reading. All. Day. Long. I think it’s time to switch to audio…Amy Poehler’s YES PLEASE! Have you embraced audio today? Honestly, I feel behind the curve on this one, but it’s the first time I’ve audio’ed for a Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon! I took it on a run with me this morning, and now I’m right back to it.

Dana back for hour 18! How are you holding up? The thing I love the most about this read a thon and is that it’s totally come as you are…if you can’t stay up the whole time or you want to take a cat nap or you want to read straight through…we’re all here just enjoying a day dedicated to reading.
Around this time my eyes sometimes start getting more tired and that’s when I start listening to an audio book to give my eyes a break. Do you listen to books on audio? Let me know in the comments below.
