Hour 24 – THE END!!!

Welcome to Hour 24!!! This is Kate from Kate’s Book Nook. I will be your co-host for the final hour. We have made it, ya’ll. We have done this!!!! As per my traditions (I have a lot of traditions) I have included the video for We Are the Champions because, to me, if you have even read for just five minutes, you are a participant and you have done a good job! I am so proud of you. I really hope that you will all be back to join us in April.

As a final thank you, I want to thank you, the readers, for participating in this event. We couldn’t do it without you. I sincerely mean that. Without you all signing up and participating and sharing this event with others, we never would have had an event to begin with. Thank you for coming back and reading books and making this possible. I really do hope to see you next time.

Now, let’s do these last 60 minutes proud and read until the last second!

Random Facts of the Hour

Anyone who has ever made these late night hours knows that I love to include random facts of the hour. So here are a couple random facts for this hour:

  • People in India are the world’s biggest readers, spending an average 10.7 hours a week.
  • The slowest-selling book is reputedly a 1716 translation of the New Testament from Coptic into Latin. The last of its 500 copies was sold in 1907.
  • One in five adults around the world cannot read or write, with the highest rates in South and West Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

If the links below don’t work immediately, forgive us! Sometimes the permalinks we receive expire or need updating at the last moment. We’re on it!

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? I’d say between 2 and 3. That was a really rough time to stay awake.
Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? I really enjoyed 84, Charing Cross Road. I wish the sequel was an ebook.
Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I wasn’t sure if I actually needed to put links in to stuff on Twitter, as this is the first time I’ve used it. Maybe a short FAQ about using each of the main social media sites for this?
What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I liked the community spirit on Twitter, it was neat to see all the people in this with me.
How many books did you read? I finished 4, but read parts of 7.
What were the names of the books you read?
    Dragon Age Asunder
    84, Charing Cross Road
Arthas: Rise of the Lich King
    Stone’s Fall
    The Martian
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
    A Storm of Swords
Which book did you enjoy most? 84, Charing Cross Road
Which did you enjoy least? Stone’s Fall
If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?
How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? I think I would like to participate again, but no more than once a year. I generally can’t give up most of a weekend to read, as much as I would love to!

The first ones. I was so determined to finish at least one book!

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
This Is How You Die is great. It’s sort of science-fiction-y but I’m not a big SF fan myself and I loved it. It’s sometimes funny, sometimes sad, metaphysical, packed with suspense… I can’t think of a person I wouldn’t recommend it too.

    [..]

How many books did you read?
Finished one, read two in full, hoping to change that to three in the few minutes we have left.

What were the names of the books you read?
    Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Chrstie
This Is How You Die, edited by Ryan North, Matthew Bennardo and David Malki
Le Tapis du salon by Annie Saumont
The Nao of Brown by Glyn Dillon

Which book did you enjoy most?
This Is How You Die (see above).

    Which did you enjoy least?
Hallowe’en Party was sort of “meh.” Definitely not one of Christie’s best.

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
That depends on my timetable but I’d love to be a reader again next time.

  9. Which hour was most daunting for you?
    – At Hr 15 I fell asleep with a book in hand, woke up Hr 16 and had to call it a night at Hr 18. I’m just too old to stay up all night…

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
-I think anything that is semi-short so you feel accomplished rather than slogging thru one book the whole time. My go-tos are YA or urban fantasy.

-Stolen by Melissa de la Cruz

Which book did you enjoy most?
-They were all great, but Origin’s 2nd half had me captivated.

If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?
    -N/A

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
-Would love to take part again in April with a bit more prep. I didn’t decide until the night before this time and didn’t have easy meals and snacks on hand. So definitely as a reader. In a couple more times once I hit my groove, I would love to be a cheerleader as well.

  12. I posted my link—but also wanted to say a bit thank you to everyone who worked to make this event a blazing success. I spent a lot of hours last week at work, telling myself that I could make it as Saturday was coming! So sad it is over but hope to be around for the next one. I made it it the middle of hour 21 and didn’t think that would happen! This was my 9th time to join in,and it was as fun as the 1st! This was the first time in the past 8 years that my son, Sam, did not read with me! I was a bit melancholy at first, but eventually got into my groove–sure loved the pictures and posts others supplied about their kids reading with them!

None of them. I didn’t push myself to do my sleepy hours, so I only did from 9am-12am

An Untaimed State, Where’d you Go Bernadette, What she left behind, Dark Places
Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
I have some ideas to try to get even more people involved. I think it would be amazing if the Readathon was known to most people and if there were thousands of people joining in. It would be cool if there were events in big cities at libraries and coffee shops where many people go to read for the readathon
What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I liked the Twitter teams and all the hourly posts
How many books did you read?

If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?
Don’t cheer constantly cuz u will end up doing that more than reading. Give yourself a set time, like get on Twitter once an hr to cheer
How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time
Definitely. At least a reader, possibly more.
