April 2015, readathon

Hour 0 – What the Readathon Means to ME + the opening meme.

deweyleaf

Hi! I’m Heather from Capricious Reader, co-host of this lovely shindig with my bestest bud EVAH, Andi from Estella’s Revenge. It is my complete honor to be your host for the first 3 hours of the Readathon. In my ten years of blogging, I have done a lot of things, but this one has always stood out as my favorite. Why? Because of the community. I remember the days when there were barely 100 readers. Today, we’re standing at over 1,700.

It brings tears to my eyes.

You see, I knew Dewey, the wonderful woman who started this biannual celebration of reading. Not as well as I wish I had, but I knew her and she was a powerhouse. So full of energy and love for this (at the time much smaller!) community. She wanted to celebrate reading. She wanted to celebrate this community. She wanted everyone to come together and read and have fun and it has been my immense honor to see her vision through for the last three years with Andi. As I’ve worked on it, this April in particular, it has really hit home what we are doing here. Not only are we coming together from points all across the globe, we’re coming together with families, with friends, with other book bloggers, and we are reading. We are celebrating. And we are loving.

I’m pretty sure Dewey is damn proud of us. I know I am.

Now, sappy stuff done, so:

In an effort to help you start reading on time, we are posting the opening meme a whole hour early! This has the added advantage of helping you pass this last long hour before the event begins. I mean, it drags, doesn’t it? Or is it just me?

Opening Meme:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

  1. Very, very excited to get started on yet another readathon! Good luck to everyone, and I just want to take a moment to thank all of you BRILLIANT coordinators for putting this together twice a year. You all do such an amazing job creating this event, and I’m in awe of your organization, motivation, and drive every single time we do this. THANK YOU and happy readathon day!

  2. 1) I’m in sunny England, so it’s a 1 PM start for me!

    2) It’s a hard choice, but I think I’m most looking forward to Blood and Beauty by Sarah Dunant, because I find the Borgias one of the most interesting families in history.

    3) I have a box of Guylians to keep me going!

    4) I’m a 29-year-old Anglo-Italian from southeast England, and I am a massive geek, so in addition to dorking out over video games and television/anime, etc., I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi. But I’ll basically read anything that’s not nailed down. 🙂

    5) This is my first readathon, so the part I’m most looking forward to is connecting with other readers. Being involved in this at the same time as so many people around the world is awesome. I’m already loving everyone’s tweets and posts.

This is my first read-a-thon. I will be dedicating the entire day to reading books, my kids are gone for the weekend and this is the first time will be able to read for 24 hours in peace.
