A Tribute to Dewey

It’s just around the corner now, guys. The Read-a-Thon starts in a mere 15 and 1/2 hours, and I could not be more excited. For Heather and I, joining the Read-a-Thon team really means two things:

1. Helping maintain and perpetuate a much-loved community event.

2. Honoring Dewey’s memory.

We’ve come so far now and done so many Read-a-Thons, many of you probably never had the pleasure of meeting Dewey. I still have Dewey’s Hidden Side of a Leaf feed in my Google Reader, and I was doing a little reminiscing and reading through her posts. This one stuck out to me as a great example of what made Dewey so lovable and fun.

Today I was just asked the best question I’ve ever been asked about my blog.

This question was asked by what is commonly known as an IRL friend, though I dislike that term because I think my internet time is Real Life and I think internet friends are Real and have Life outside the internet.

But this friend is what one of my internet friends calls a “flesh friend,” and I think you will agree that her question has Best Ever status:

“Are you still reading books for the internet?”

Yes, internet, it is for you that I read all these books! I hope you know what a great sacrifice it is for me to do you this favor. Please send all million-dollar donations expressing your gratitude to:

We miss you, Dewey. Thank you for showing us the way. 🙂 Cheers!

  1. Thank you so much for this lovely vignette. I did not know Dewey, and I have often wondered about her. She sounds like something special, and I am bummed her blog was taken down. Would really like to read it. How great that you all continue the wonderful Readathon in Dewey’s memory.

  2. I love doing this event twice a year in her memory….it’s always a special time. Let me know if you guys need any extra help last minute while I loved hosting last year….I’ll be reading this year and taking it easy. Thanks for all the hard work! Let’s Read! 😉

  3. I miss Dewey’s wit. Her blog posts were always such a joy to read. I bet now she’s somewhere still reading though no long for the internet.

    Thanks for posting this.

  4. Dewey was probably the second book blog I ran across before I made Confuzzled Books. I was in awe of a community(still am) who loves books just as I do. I only talked to Dewey a few times she was very nice.

  5. What a great post. I never “met” Dewey, but I’ve participated in this read-a-thon a couple of times and I’m thrilled to have a free Saturday to do nothing but read and blog with some of my favorite people. Thanks for keeping this challenge going, but more importantly, for keeping Dewey’s memory alive.

  6. Thanks for this post – I hope we remember Dewey in such a tangible way every Read-a-Thon! I hadn’t been following Dewey for very long before she died (less than a year) and had only done one ‘Thon, but her beautiful spirit made a big impact on me.

  7. I wish I had known Dewey. I was just beginning to enter the book blogging world when she died. I had known OF her, but had never met her and never spoken to her when I heard about her passing. She sounds like a wonderful person.

  8. I became a book blogger because I wanted to participate in Dewey’s Readathon, and now I’ve been blogging 3 years. I love that she still means so much to our community, and I am so thankful to the wonderful bloggers who continue to make Readathon happen!
